Hi Kay,

a few comments:

- first I don't think we officially support upgrade from 3.8 to 4.1. Last time I checked we only supported 2 versions of difference (from 3.8 to 4.0 or 4.0 to 4.2 for instance).

- second, when you use the install activate: you need to specify all the packages to install in one single operation (it will trigger a reload), and not one by one like you are trying to do.

Probably you should trying something like:

"admin install act disk0:*p-4.1.2 sync"

- third, I see you have "disk0:hfr-os-mbi-3.8.4.CSCtl00014-1.0.0" in inactive mode, so I guess you tried to install it on top of the current 3.8.4. I suppose it's something mandatory for an upgrade (I didn't check the SMU, so I'm just supposing).

For this one, you can not activate it at the same time than the 4.1.2 packages. You'll have to do the SMU first (and being an os-mbi smu, I bet it will reload the system), install commit, then install activate the 4.1.2 packages.

To get back on my first point, it may be easier to turboboot the system directly to your target image to make it simpler and start on a fresh system.

First many thanks for your kind,  I so wonder that on cisco web told that we able to upgrade from 3.8.X-4.0.x to 4.1.2 (CRS-1_Upgrade_Procedure_3.8.x-4.0.x_to_4.1.2.pdf), if can't upgrade from 3.8.4 to 4.1.2 could you explan to me which IOS-XR version that support BGP 4 byte and able to upgrade from 3.8.4.?

I really don't know how to approach this.

Hi Kay,

my bad, I didn't check it myself. If the doc is stating that it should work, then it's supported.

(actually, it's more a matter of "what is tested in our lab" then "what is working", but in your case, if the doc mention it, then you are good to go).

You will need to process in two steps then.

1- activation of your SMU for 3.8.4, and very likely reload (then install commit after reload)

2- activation of all your 4.1.2 packages and reload again (and install commit again after the reload).

Let us know how it goes.

If you encounter issues, please send:

- admin show install act sum

- admin show install inact sum

- and the show install log X detail (X being the number of the operation you tried and which failed).

Got new error when I activate  SMU 3.8.4 and they point to this line-->

Hello Kay,

indeed, if you read hfr-os-mbi-3.8.4.CSCtl00014.txt, you can see:

Pre-requisites:          hfr-base-3.8.4.CSCte01589-1.0.0

That means you need to have the SMU for CSCte01589 installed and activated to be able to apply CSCtl00014.

I've checked CSCte01589 and it seems to be another reload SMU.

That means you'll have to reload the router 3 times to upgrade to 4.1.2.

It sends me back to my initial comment: it may be easier to turboboot it to 4.1.2 if you can afford the longer maintenance window (turboboot being launched from rommon, the impact on traffic will be longer).

Another approach would be to prepare flash disks with the targeted 4.1.2 version in lab and to upgrade the box swapping the flashdisks from rommon.

I've seen 4Bytes ASN support in 4.0.0 but it's not recommend to upgrade to 4.0.x anymore (too old version).

You should indeed target 4.1.x or better 4.2.x.

But to answer your question, both 4.0.3 and 4.0.4 should support BGP 4-byte ASN properly.

Direct PIE upgrade (using install add/activate) is not supported from 3.6 to 4.1.

You have to upgrade to intermediate versions (3.6 --> 3.9 --> 4.1)

That's why you may consider other an approach like turboboot or pre-stage of flashdisks.

A lot of parameters should be taken into consideration for such an upgrade: flashdisk size, format (fat16/32), rommon version, ... I suggest you contact your cisco representative to discuss it.

-p code supports PPC based hardware (RP, and Fabric / Line Card of first generation at 40Gbps).

-px code supports both PPC and Intel based hardware (PRP, 140Gbps Fabric and Line Cards).

----> -px uses more disk space on your flashdisk (disk0:).

A -px SMU can not be installed on -p code or vise-versa.

If you want to benefit most of the SMU, you'll have to pick the -px code (and in that case, be sure your flashdisk are 4GB, which is very unlikely if you upgrade from 3.6).
