input/output rate when doing show interface on an l2transport subinterface

Hi

Just wondering why there isn't any input/output rate on l2transport subinterfaces.

L2transport subinterface

Bundle-Ether625.2204 is up, line protocol is up
Interface state transitions: 1
Hardware is VLAN sub-interface(s), address is d46d.506e.0304
Description: xxxxxx
Layer 2 Transport Mode
MTU 1568 bytes, BW 10000000 Kbit (Max: 10000000 Kbit)
reliability Unknown, txload Unknown, rxload Unknown
Encapsulation 802.1Q Virtual LAN,
Outer Match: Dot1Q VLAN 2204
Ethertype Any, MAC Match src any, dest any
loopback not set,
Last input 00:00:00, output 00:00:00
Last clearing of "show interface" counters never
49757973 packets input, 17663067655 bytes
1714 input drops, 0 queue drops, 0 input errors
95559630 packets output, 68772407279 bytes
0 output drops, 0 queue drops, 0 output errors

Layer3 subinterface

Bundle-Ether625.3003 is up, line protocol is up
Interface state transitions: 1
Hardware is VLAN sub-interface(s), address is d46d.506e.0304
Description: To xxxxxxx
Internet address xxxxxxxx

reliability 255/255, txload 0/255, rxload 0/255
Encapsulation 802.1Q Virtual LAN, VLAN Id 3003, 2nd VLAN Id 835,
loopback not set,
ARP type ARPA, ARP timeout 04:00:00
Last input 00:00:00, output 00:00:00
Last clearing of "show interface" counters never
5 minute input rate 2000 bits/sec, 1 packets/sec <--------------------rate
5 minute output rate 0 bits/sec, 1 packets/sec <--------------------rate
4612685 packets input, 841917524 bytes, 0 total input drops
0 drops for unrecognized upper-level protocol
Received 0 broadcast packets, 0 multicast packets
5700009 packets output, 2695668691 bytes, 5200 total output drops
Output 2 broadcast packets, 0 multicast packets

If you configure l2transport on a "main" interface you get the counters. So why doesn't we have this rate counter on subinterface.

Hello Peter

First of all, thanks for posting an interesting question. The answer is no, we do not show the packet rate counters on the l2transport sub-interface. The only way to retrieve the counters is when the l2transport interface is attached to a BVI and from you can then poll the BVI interface.

I think you might still get the counters if you use the show l2vpn bridge-domain command.

Hope this information helps.

Hi Vinit

Doesn't seem to be any input/output rate that i can find under the show l2vpn bridge-domain. With detail we can get

 Statistics:
packets: received 1829913116, sent 5014619103
bytes: received 212440012314, sent 931729196803

Quite bad that we dont have any rate on l2 transport interface. Makes troubleshooting these kind of interface much harder.

Is it the lack of input/output rate on l2transport subinterface also the reason for lack of stats when doing a monitor interface?

I had a request open for this few years ago that was evaluated. the request was closed because of performance concerns in platform infrastructure.

It could be re-evaluated with eXR, but computing rate counters are quite intensive task. The reason why it existed for L3 interfaces becuase the scale of L3 intfs is much lower then for L2transport (128k).

Hi Xander

I can understand that it can get a bit hectic for the box if you have rate counters for 128k interfaces. But as in my case where i maybe have a couple of hundreds its a shame that we don't have any input/output rate counters.

Have there been any discussions about enabling rate counters per l2transport interface? And maybe set a max limit of 1000-5000 interface or what you think is feasible for a 9k.

When it comes to l2 services the 9k and ios-xr really need some major work. Compared to you competitors its lacking some basic stuff when it comes to operating and troubleshooting.

/Regards Peter

that is definitely a consideration possible peter. or similarly as how the np rate counters work. not with an average computed like inteface rates, but merely of taking a snapshot of the counters with a timestamp and few seconds later running a delta divided by time lapsed to get an idea of the packet rate. would that work?

If so, and if you have a Cisco Systems Engineer to work with, have them file this DDTS requirement.

At the same time, not happy to hear the comment, but happy to do something about it. What other things are you thinking off that need to be done?

cheers

xander

Hi

I can ask my SE to open a DDTS on this requirement.

Regarding the other l2 service stuff. Can i reach you in some other way other than this forum?  Otherwise it will be a little bit off-topic information in this thread.

Regard Peter

hi peter, sounds good. could you send me a note on my forum userid at cisco dot com? we can take it from there.

cheers!!
