Migrating from RSP880 to RSP5 on ASR9000

Hello,

does someone has experience with the following migration procedure? I would like to know if there are some prerequisites regarding the IOS XR version on the new RSP5.

https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/iosxr/asr9000/hardware-install/hig/b-asr9k-hardware-installation-guide/b-asr9k-hardware-installation-guide_chapter_0101.html#id_migrating-rsp4-to-rsp5

  • Do I need to upgrade/downgrade/patch the RSP5 to the same eXR version as on the existing RSPs in advance?
  • What will happen after inserting the RSP5 to the chassis if the eXR version will be different on the new RSP5 and on the existing RSPs? Will the RSP5 be upgraded/downgraded to the eXR version which runs on the active RSP?

Best Regards,

Peter

for example if you have 2x RSP880 running 64bit 7.3.2 code

you can remove the standby RSP880 and insert the RSP5, the RSP5 should sync with the active RSP880

you would switchover to the RSP5, making it the "active" RSP, then insert the 2nd RSP5 or remove the 1st RSP880

Thank you

What will happen when the RSP5 has for example 7.5.2 code and the RSP880s have 7.3.2?

Will the RSP5 be downgraded to 7.3.2?

Yes, it will be downgraded.

the standby on boot will be wiped and will pull the configuration, data files from the primary
