Unity Connection Upgrade from version 7.0.2 to 10.5.1

Cisco Unity Connection 10.0(1) and later releases can only be installed on virtual machines. Physical servers are not supported to install or upgrade Unity Connection 10.0(1) and later, and an attempt to install or upgrade Unity Connection 10.x on physical servers will fail.

An upgrade from Unity Connection from version 7.0.2 to 10.5 will consist of the following major steps:
7.0.2 to 7.1.3
7.1.3 to 8.0.2
8.0.2 to 10.5.1

There is an additional step of backing up Unity Connection 7.1.3 on MCS and restoring it on exact 7.1.3 version on UCS.

1. Review the section “Requirements for Installing Cisco Unity Connection 10.x on a Virtual Machine” in System Requirements for Cisco Unity

Connection Release 10.x at:

2. In the Cisco Unity Connection 10.x Supported Platforms List , in the table of virtualization specifications, determine which VMware configuration you want to deploy on the Unity Connection server, based on the maximum number of ports and the maximum number of users. Then make note of the VMware OVA template that corresponds with that configuration. The document is available at:

3. Download the VMware OVA template that you identified in Task 2. See the “Installing Cisco Unity Connection for the First Time on a Virtual Machine” section in the applicable Release Notes for Cisco Unity Connection at:

4. If the Unity Connection physical server is running version 7.1(2) or earlier: Upgrade to Unity Connection 7.1(3). See the applicable chapter in the

Upgrade Guide for Cisco Unity Connection Release 7.x at:

++++Caution: Running Unity Connection 7.1(3) in a virtual environment for any longer than is required for the migration is not supported.++++

4.1 As per the release notes for Unity Connection 7.1.3, you can upgrade directly to version 7.1.3 from version 7.0.2.

5. Provision the physical host where the Unity Connection virtual machine will run, according to the “Requirements for Installing a Cisco Unity Connection 10.x Virtual Machine” section in System Requirements for Cisco Unity Connection Release 10.x at:

6. Deploy the OVA template that was downloaded in Task 3. to create a virtual machine and configure it.

7. In the VMware vSphere Client, configure the virtual disks that are assigned to the Unity Connection virtual machine in independent-persistent mode. This provides the best storage performance.

8. On the virtual machine, change the BIOS setting so the virtual machine boots first from the DVD virtual device, then from the virtual hard disk. See the “Changing the Boot Order of the Unity Connection 10.x Virtual Machine” section.

9. If you are migrating from Unity Connection without cluster, follow the steps given in the “To Migrate from Unity Connection without Cluster” section.

why wouldn't you just use COBRA's? export from 7.1.3 and then import into the version you are going to. Just make the changes that are needed on the new version. Just curious.

AFAIK they are required as they are all major upgrades, however you can check with TAC licensing team for exact details.

Hi,

Thanks for the excellent information, Quick question on CUC upgrade issue I am encountering

My CUC is on version 7.1.3.1000-11, build anew VM, applied both COP files and upgraded to 8.0.3.23900-5, when I try to upgrade to 10.5 it says invalid file and verified checksum . it is a good ISO image, attempted again with a new Image and I go the same error both with SFTP and CD/DVD mapping. Tried 9.1.2 it says disallowed from this version.

Am I missing something or not following the right versions?

Any help on this is appreciated.

Hi Unni,

Please share the exact file name of the upgrade file that you are using and its size. Have you verified the MD5 value of your iso with the value given on cisco.com.

For, UCSInstall_UCOS_10.5.1.10000-7.sgn.iso , the MD5 value should be the following

393f3e5d82f9bc2750299d17ca52c36a

If using any other version, it can be verified from the website

Thanks Manish!. MD5 Value was confirmed .

Following was the upgrade path I followed

7.1.3.10000-11 to UCSInstall_UCOS_8.0.3.23900-5.sgn.iso to UCSInstall_UCOS_10.5.1.10000-7.sgn.iso

Due to time constraints to troubleshoot this issue, I reinstalled 7.1.3.10000-11 and upgraded to 8.5.1.10000-206 and then to 10.5.1.10000-11 and it worked

Hi Manish,

Is there a reason why you would not upgrade Unity Connection 7.x directly to 8.0.2 on MCS, backup, and then install 8.0.2 on UCS, restore and upgrade to 10.5?
