8865 KEM won't power up on PoE

I'm attempting to set up a new 8865 phone with one 28 button KEM (dual screen).  The phone says it is unable to power the accessory.

The phone is connected to a Cisco SG350-48MP.

BWE-SW-02(config-if)#do show power inline gi1/0/25

Interface Admin Oper Power (W) Class Device Priority
---------- ---------- ----------- ----------------- ----- -------------- --------
gi1/0/25 Auto On 4.900 (13.398) 4 Phone critical

Port Status: Port is on 2Pair
Port standard: 60WPOE
Admin power limit (for port power-limit mode): 20.0 watts
Time range:
Link partner standard: 802.3AT
Max Power Allocation: 60.0 watts
Spare pair: Disabled

Current (mA): 94
Voltage(V): 52.900

Any help would be appreciated

I have upgrade the firmware on the switch to 2.5.5.47 and the issue seems to be resolved now.  I was previously using version 2.5.0.83.

It seems the renegotiation for more power was failing, but it is working now.

Hello Brian,

What exactly do you see on the phone's screen?

Does the KEM light up at all?

How did you determine the phone can't get enough power?

Are there any other accessories plugged into the phone that might be consuming power?

Do you have an external power supply (power cube) that you can use for testing?

Do you have working phones with KEM on other switches/ports? If yes, you can test plugging the phone into one of them.

Do you have any power limit config on the switch?

As of now, I'll assume you use the correct KEM for this phone model, it is running firmware 12.X or higher, you've selected it on the device configuration page and have the required device pack installed.

I can suggest disabling the following settings from the device configuration page:

Link Layer Discovery Protocol - Media Endpoint Discover (LLDP-MED): Switch Port

Power Negotiation

Hi Kaloyan,

The KEM shows no lights.  There are no other accessories connected.

Since the negotiated power is showing it is set via CDP, I didn't think LLDP settings would apply, but I can try that.

I don't have a cube 4, but I do have an external poe injector I could try.

I do have this setup and working at our office on an SG300-8p.  One difference is that the one that works has the macro enabled, and on the one that isn't working, macros are turned off so I intend to explore that as well.

Thanks for the advice.  I'll update on my progress when I have something to report.

Also, I didn't determine the phone cannot get enough power.  The phone is displaying a message that it cannot power the phone.  I don't know why it can't though.

ON SG350, 8851 with KEM is going to work only on the 1-4  ports.(marked on yellow). no other ports will power up the KEM. i faced this with one of my customer.

Those are the 60w capable ports.  KEM's do not need that much power to run.  I do have this working on an SG300-8p at my office so I know it can work.  For what its worth, I actually am connected to port 25 on a 48 port switch and it is one of the ports you mentioned.  Thanks

AFAIK the 60 W ports are the 1-4 ports on SG350. Since it worked on the 60W port i didn't try other ports.

can you increase the  admin maximum power on the port. i can see it as 20.0 watts.

8865 +KEM falls under class 4 which require 30 W

An update on my progress:  I have taken another 8865 with KEM and connected to our corporate system. I'm using an SG350X-24P to power the phone.

When the phone first came up everything worked including the KEM.  Once the firmware on the phone updated I received the same error.  During the brief amount of time it was working, CDP had negotiated for 17w of power.

switches support 802.3at PoE+, 802.3af PoE, and Cisco prestandard (legacy) PoE on any of the RJ45 network ports. 60W PoE is also supported on selected RJ-45 network ports

Maximum power of 60W is delivered to any of the 60W PoE ports, and maximum power of 30W is delivered to any of the other RJ45 network ports, until the PoE budget for the switch is reached

set macro auto smartport on gi1/0/1 (but I don't see that config on the port)

I turned the macro back off but the KEM continues to work now. I moved to another port and tried to replicate the issue but at this point I cannot replicate the problem.

I see the firmware version on the switch is newer than the one I'm having an issue with so I'll update that next.

I have upgrade the firmware on the switch to 2.5.5.47 and the issue seems to be resolved now.  I was previously using version 2.5.0.83.

It seems the renegotiation for more power was failing, but it is working now.
