Backup

Hello Experts,

Is there any differences btw running DRS backup from the CUCM Publisher and the one taken from Subscriber? Is the following a valid statement?

Since restoring from the Publisher only recovers the CUCM DB configuration, other data, such as certificates, Music on Hold (MoH), and TFTP files, are not recovered.

If this is true and if we need to backup all existing local files in a Subscriber, do we need to run the DRS from Sub? Does the backup file taken from Sub contains the locally installed files such as certificates, Music on Hold etc....?

Thanks,

MK

Hi

When you set up a DRF job on the publisher, it includes all the data from all the subscribers. As I recall you don't even select servers any more on 10.x, it just does the whole cluster. You can see this in the status history..

Thanks Aaron,

What is the differnece btw a backup taken from  Pub and the one taken from Sub? Are they exactly the same? If so,  I  believe the following statement (see the link in below)is not valid.

Cisco strongly recommends that you keep a full Disaster Recovery Framework (DRF) backup of the entire cluster. Since this process only recovers the CUCM DB configuration, other data, such as certificates, Music on Hold (MoH), and TFTP files, are not recovered. In order to avoid these issues, keep a full cluster DRF backup.

Hi mightyking,

first of all ... the Sub backup do not have the CDR/CAR feature, this one exists only on the Pub backup.

Second ... about the statement ... you are able to shutdown the Sub and create a New Sub (with the same info of the "shutdown Sub"), but you will not have the certificates, MoH and TFTP files ... that's the importance to have a Full DRF ... with a Full DRF you are able to create a New Sub and Restore all your info (certificates, MoH and TFTP Files).

Hope this helps.

Hi Marcelo,

I had to rebuild a Sub due to Unaligned Partition message after upgrading from 8.6. to 9.1.2.

I did a Full DRF backup from Publisher and restored after rebuilding the 9.1.2 Sub. The follwoing is the output of the show version active command before and after the fresh install. As you can see we had some locally installed files in our 8.6 version of the Sub but in 9.1.2 those files are no longer available. Note that we did a restore using the file that we backed up using the Pub DRS. This exercise proves that the Publisher only recovers the database as mentioned in the above statement.

First Question:

If I had taken the Packup from the Sub, would it have backed up the locally installed files (COP files)?

admin:show version active

Active Version Installed Software Options:
cmterm-7942-7962-sip.9-3-1-1.cop

cm-locale-fr-Fr-8.6.2.1000-1.cop

Second question:

When we launch a DRS from a Sub, the Sub itself doen't start the backup. It communicates with the master agent (Pub) and then the Pub is the one who starts the backup process. My question is; what is the purpose of having the DRS function in the Sub? When Pub is not available there will be no backups being started from the Sub and when the Pub is available we take the backup from the Pub. I found having the DRS functionality in the Sub is useless. Can you metion a situation where we need to take the backup from the Sub?

Thanks,

Mk

Hi mightyking,

 that's a good discussion ...

1) since CUCM version 8.6(1), a new feature was introduced in order to restore a Publisher DB from a Subscriber DB ... in other words, if you have problems with the Publisher DB you can use the Subscriber DB to correct it.

2) Cisco strongly recommends that you keep a full DRF backup of the entire Cluster. To keep your certificates, MoH and TFTP files ... in other words ... if you want to recover all these info (certificates, MoH and TFTP) you must have a full DRF backup of the Subscriber.

3) Before the Restore process of a new CUCM, you must have the following info to match the original CUCM:

IP address
Host name
Domain name
Security passphrase
Exact CUCM version
Installed COP files

In other words, when you install your new Subscriber, you not only install the exact CUCM version but you also must install the COP files ... if you didn't do that, then you are not in the "same CUCM version".

Check the link Publisher Restore from Subscriber.

Hope this helps.

Marcelo,

As you can see these are phone firmware and language fies and have nothing to do with IOS upgrade!!!!

cmterm-7942-7962-sip.9-3-1-1.cop
cmterm-7942-7962-sccp.9-3-1-1.cop
cm-locale-fr-Fr-8.6.2.1000-1.cop

I believe my both questions remain unanswered:

1) If I had taken the Packup from the Sub, would it have backed up the locally installed files (COP files)?

2) What is the purpose of having the DRS function in the Sub if Pub is the master agent and without master agent (Pub) no backup process will be started? Don`t you find it useless?

Thanks,

MK

Hi,

1) No, you must install the COP files - check the item 3) of my last post for a complete description.

2) If you don't have the Master Agent then you don't have a backup ... and the question changes to: "What's the importance of a backup?" ... but that's not your question ... your question is "What's the need of a Subscriber's backup?" ... I explained that in items 1) and 2) of my last post.

Regards.
