Cisco IP Phone 7941- Corrupted Firmware

Hi Guys,

I have some cisco 7941s that were stuck in the bullseye home screen after an upgrade of cucm 10 to 11.5. I have been trying many methods after reviewing this community including the TFTP server with the phone loads. So i basically reverted to an old firmware and it was successful, however when I tried to upgrade to another firmware by basically the same TFTP medium it fails and doesn't seem to find the new phone loads.

Is there another method I can use? I have also uploaded similar firmware loads on the call manager and forced the phone to download but I keep seeing it stuck at the term41.load file which lead me to using the TFTP server.

Hello,

What is the version of CUCM?
How many nodes do you have, including Publisher?

Target CUCM version?

Is TFTP service active and running on all nodes?

Active firmware on the phone?

Target firmware for the phone?

If you can answer those question, I will be glad to help you as much as I can.

Thank you.

The questions asked by the other poster will help us determine why your CUCM is not downloading firmware successfully.

In the meantime, you can do a couple of things if you just need to get this phone online and worry about CUCM later:

  1. Have you tried restarting the TFTP service on your CUCM TFTP servers to see if it's just a glitch?
  2. You can put the newer (from v11.5) firmware files on another TFTP server (like a router), then on the phone's configuration page indicate a "Load Server". This will cause the phone to interact with CUCM for it's config file, but when directed to get new firmware it will go to the alternate TFTP site. That will tell us if it is the firmware or if it is the TFTP server.
  3. However, I suspect you are right that you have corrupt firmware. I would download newer firmware from Cisco's site and upgrade the firmware for that one phone model on your CUCM server by installing a model-specific COP file. You'd need to restart the TFTP service after that of course.
  4. Long shot: The 7941 phones are old enough that they may be subject to the two-stage firmware upgrade problem if you have done a factory reset on them. I'm not clear from your post if you put the CUCMv10 firmware on and then tried to get the phone to talk to the 11.5 server, or if you did a factory reset before trying to get the phone to talk to the 11.5 server. I'm guessing since you were already working with the 10.5 server this is not the case, but I thought I'd throw it out there as a possibility.

Let us know how it goes.

Hi there

When you say upgrading the firware fails, does it fail from the phone level or even the installation.

Here the running firmware and target firmware info is really required

Also check out this bug as well

https://bst.cloudapps.cisco.com/bugsearch/bug/CSCuv73972/?rfs=iqvred

Symptom:
When attempting to install a .cop file that was not signed by the RSA version 3 keys to CUCM 11.0.1 the install will fail.

Conditions:
Installing a .cop file that is not signed by the RSA version 3 keys to CUCM 11.0.1

Workaround:
Phone Firmware Workaround:
Upload the contents contained within the .zip file for the required Phone Firmware if available to the TFTP directory on the TFTP Server.

Other COP File Workaround:
N/A

Hope this Helps

Cheers
Rath!
