cisco IP phone 7960 test

IP phone continuously display the following message,  

1. Configuring CM 

2. Opening 10.163.235.1 

Can anyone let me know the issue please? Is that looking for Call manger software from the router? if so, why call manager software is not available in 2610 router. show telephony-service is not recognized by 2610 router to check for CME software. 

How can I verify, setup, configure CME on my 2610 router? So that I can test 7960 IP phone.

Can you post your config?

Looks like your phone has a IP address and trying to connect to the TFTP Server.

I would like to check your config/tftp server/firmware loads.

Justin, I do not setup any tftp server. Do I need one tftp server? May i know the purpose of TFTP server?

Hello,

CME is only supported on 2600XM series routers, and not regular 2600's. This is the problem. Check the compatibility matrixes. Here's the link for further info:

Justin, How do I create ephone and ephone dn? How do verify/make cisco telephony service is supported by 2610 router? When I give router#show telephony-service ; is not recognized command.

Please see my above post. 2610 doesnt support CME. You need to have a 2610XM.

Siva, if you don't have a 2600XM you can use GNS3 to simulate the IOS and CME in a lab environment.

Why do I need TFTP server? CME will come along with Router?

My IP phones are getting IP address from the router(dhcp server), still do i need to go for 26xxXM?

Hello Shiva,

In order for the router to recognize the CME software that will be installed on flash memory, you need to have a 2600XM router running the proper IOS version. Otherwise, it wont work at all.

You need to have this before the router will let you configure ephone and ephone-dn's.

The phones need a TFTP server because this is how the phones pull their firmware and configuration files when they are trying to register with the CME router. In order for the phones to know where the tftp server is, you need to configure option 150 under your dhcp pool in the router. ex:

ip dhcp pool Phones

network 192.168.1.0 255.255.255.0

option 150 ip 192.168.1.1

default-router 192.168.1.1

Therefore, the short answer to your question would be yes, you need to have a 26xxXM router. Otherwise, you can use the GNS3 that Justin suggested.

Also, the CME doesnt come with the router, it will need to be downloaded from CCO, and you need to verify that you are running a version of IOS that supports voice.

Do I need to use any voice interface card on the 2600XM router to connect with the Cisco IP phone?

You only need to use a voice interface card if you plan on connecting to the PSTN. If not, and you just want to do VOIP, then you will not need any voice card. You will just need a router with an etherswitch card that has POE, or a POE capable switch. If your switch isnt POE capable, then you will need the power cube to power the phone.

1. PoE ethernet card for 2600XM router

2. Voice interface card to connect PSTN

3. Ethernet card for 2600XM to connect with PoE switch.
