DNS configuration for external URL phone services

We have IP phones need to access external URL for phone services.

And there are two DNS servers configured on CUCM. The primary DNS server is an internal, and the secondary DNS server is for external.

My understanding is the phone will only access the secondary DNS server when the first DNS server is not reachable in the network.

However, the phones need to access external URLs, and there is no records of external URL on the primary DNS server since it's for internal use.

Please advise.

Thanks.

Hi

Your 'internal' DNS server should be configured with 'forwarders' which it will refer to if it isn't authoritative for the domains being looked up. Basically the server you have as your 'primary' should have a reference to the 'secondary'.

The phones will then get a response from the primary server for both internal and external destinations.
