How to shut down a CM subscriber gracefully

I have to physically move a Callmanager subscriber and would like to know how best to shut it down with minimum impact. The cluster is running 8.0.3.

I know we can just shut down the server via the cli but was hoping we could do this in a more control way, move phones off it and then shut down.

BTW I'm new to CUCMs!

Hi Patrick,

You can control where the phones register by using the relationship

between the Device Pools and CUCM Groups. For example, if the phones

are using Device Pool dp_1 which lists the Sub you want to move as it's

first choice (as determined by the related CUCM Group) you can reorder the

CUCM group and re-register the phones to a Sub that will remain active (not moving)

ahead of time

then use

utils system shutdown from the cli on the Sub

Rob is correct (+5 Buddy), my perspective on this is not to bother if your CM groups are constructed with multiple CM servers already as the transition to backup server is instantaneous and for idle phones you cannot even see it, phones with a call on them will not drop the call under most circumstances (depends on circuit type the call is on), you will simply lose supplementary features such as Hold, etc for the remainder of the call.

You also need to ensure that other applications that may be using this servers have redundancy built in, as well as voice GWs, media resources, etc.

Silly question but how do I check what other GWs, media resources are using this subscriber?

Login to the Gateway and search for dial-peers if using H323/SIP and identify the session-target, if using MGCP check

mgcp call-agent and ccm-manager redundant-host. To check hardware media resources look for "sccp ccm".

Yes, this is fully expected This will actually move the phones over

to where you need them to be in preparation for the shutdown of the Sub.
