Hi There,
I need a help/advise.
We are planning to migrate the ip phones from CM5 (5.1.2.3000-2) cluster to CM8 (8.0.3.24047-1). since CM5 is end of support we are planning to merge the remote site with global Cluster which is CM8.
I wonder about the Firmware Version changes on the IP Phones (7911,7912,7960, 7961 and 7936) and also not sure do i need to do anything on the CTL files on the phones.
Appreciated your feedback and advise.
Thanks
Balaji

Hi,
1) when you upgreade your CUCM, The firmware gets change in CUCM which will inturn change the firmware of Ip Phone.
2) Yes you will have to delete CTL file in all the ip phone to make them register to new cluster.

Hi
If you are migrating from 5.x to 8.x, you don't need to delete any ITLs as the ITL did not exist in 5.x. The phones will simply register to 8.x normall, and download the ITL from there.
From that point, they will not migrate back to 5.x without having the ITL cleared. You can avoid this if you think you will need to move them back by setting the 'rollback to pre 8.x' service parameter as directed in the manuals http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/cucm/security/8_0_1/secugd/secusbd.html#wp1092162
This should leave all the phones with a blank ITL, so you can do whatever you need to do and when the migration is complete, set the rollback enterprise parameter back to normal as directed in the document I referenced.
Just read this again as I wasn't awake the first time - CTL is a bit different, so assuming you have secured the 5.x cluster, can you not sign the new cluster with the same security keys?

Hi Aaron,
WE are going to migrate from 5.x to 8.x, and not going to fallback unless we find any major issues, Assuming Nil issue.
I need to clarify on the CTL part. do you thing we will have a issue when ip phones moving from 5x to 8.x. Do you think i need to check on the 5.x running on the secure mode or not. I have done some studies on the cm5 with help of local remote admin and found following changes on the phones FW.
Device Type | CM5 Load | CM8 Load |
7911 | SCCP11.8-2-2SR2S | SCCP11.9-2-1S |
7912 | CP7912080003SCCP070409A | CP7912080004SCCP080108A |
7936 | cmterm_7936.3-3-14-0 | cmterm_7936.3-3-20-0 |
7960 | P00308000700 | P00308010200 |
7961 | SCCP41.8-3-2SR1S | SCCP41.9-1-1SR1S |
Do you think i need to upgrade the CM5 phones with cm8 phone load before the migration.please advise.
Thanks

Hi
It sounds like you need to go on a training course or read some Cisco Press books before you do anything.
You need to worry about CTL files IF you are running a secure cluster only. Most people do not.
You need to worry about ITL files if you might need to roll back. I would worry about this, as you don't sound like you know much about CUCM at all.
CUCM includes firmware, and firmware maintenance is done when the phones boot up and connect to a cluster automatically.

Hi Aaron,
I knew that Firmware maintenance takes place when the phones boots up, just wondering about theip phone behaviors when its moving from cm5 to cm8.

Hi Balaji,
I'll just add a note to the great tips from my friends Aaron and Ronak (+5 each!)
Some of your phone firmware is too old to move directly to the
versions you listed in the upgrade 8.x build. So you will need to address
them ahead of time. it is always best to upgrade the phone firmware ahead of time
anyways to save the overhead on the night of the upgrade.
7912
- should be OK to upgrade directly
7936
- should be OK to upgrade directly
7940/7960
Note
You cannot upgrade to firmware release 8.1(2) directly from firmware release 8.0(10) or an earlier release. You have to upgrade to firmware release 8.1(1) first, then upgrade from release 8.1(1) to release 8.1(2).
You are @ 8.0.7 so these notes apply to your build.
7911
Note For all SCCP firmware upgrades from firmware release versions earlier than 8.3(3) to version 9.2(1) or greater, you must first upgrade your firmware to an intermediate version (8.3(3) - 8.5(2)) then upgrade to 9.2(1).
You are @ 8.2.2 so these notes apply to your build
7961
Note For all SCCP firmware upgrades from firmware release versions earlier than 8.3(3) to version 8.5(2)SR1 or greater, you must first upgrade your firmware to version 8.5(2). Once you have upgraded to version 8.5(2), you can upgrade your IP Phone to version 9.1(1)SR1 or later.
You are @ 8.3.2sr1 so these notes apply to your build
Cheers!
