Issues with 7985 phones in CUCM 10.5

I installed a new CUCM 10.5 cluster and want to test the compatibility of old phones like 7985 in this CUCM version.  Following are the issues I am seeing with 7985 phones.

Case 1:

7985 is registered to CUCM 8.x cluster.  EX90 is registered to CUCM 10.5 cluster.  SIP trunk is configured between these two clusters.  When I make a call between these two units - 7985 & EX90, the call is successfully established but as a audio only call.  There is no video.

If I register the 7985 to the same CUCM 10.5 cluster as EX90, then there is no problem.  I am able to make a video call.

Case 2 :

7985 is registered to CUCM 10.5 cluster.  MCU 5310 is registered to a VCS cluster.  CUCM & VCS clusters are integrated through a SIP trunk.  When the 7985 phone joins a meeting in the MCU (CUCM to VCS to MCU), the call is getting established as audio only call.  There is no video.

When the same 7985 phone is registered to CUCM 8.x cluster which also has a SIP trunk to VCS, the video call gets established successfully.

Am I missing any config to get the above scenario work with video.  Appreciate your help on this.  Thanks.

Hi,

First of all please check "Device--trunk" options from both sides.

Check parameter "Retry Video call as audio"  should be off

Check also "Media Termination Point required"  should be on

If it's ok with these 2 options,check also configuration of your video CFB

I did these changes, but no success.

Ideally this would require detailed callmanager service traces for first issue and callmanager traces plus VCS diagnostic logs for second issue. Make sure that Cucm 8.x is running one of the latest 8.6.2 code and also for the second scenario you need to check the compatibility of your cucm 10.5 with the VCS version.

I have narrowed down the problem.  There is no video in a intercluster call only if it is between EX90 and 7985 phone through the SIP trunk.  Using the same sip trunk, there is no problem in intercluster call between 9971 and 7985 phones.

I have attached the sip signalling logs in the 10.5 cluster.

EX90 : 10.1.1.43, 3666

CUCM 10.5 - 10.1.1.10

CUCM 8.x - 10.1.1.11 & 10.1.1.12

7985 - 5002

Hi Majeed,

It would be good to have working example as well as suggested by Manish.

It looks like EX90 is trying to send/receive  via h224 in  200 Ok msg.

m=application 16540 RTP/AVP 100
a=rtpmap:100 H224/4800>>>>>>>>>>>>>
a=sendrecv>>>>>>>>>>>>

This is followed by an with Attribute inactive on following response from the phone.

m=application 0 RTP/AVP 96
a=rtpmap:96 H224/0
a=inactive>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Please find attached logs for the working case.

EX90 : 10.1.1.43, 3666

CUCM 10.5 - 10.1.1.10

CUCM 8.x - 10.1.1.11 & 10.1.1.12

9971 - 5033

I could see a=inactive in the working logs as well.

I would start by looking at the codecs used by the 7985, that phone was made about 10 years ago, most likely they're simply not compatible with new endpoints.

if this helps, please rate

I did checked at the codecs used.  It is H264 for video and G722/G729a for Audio.  With my knowledge, I analysed the CUCM logs and I dont see any issue in the capability negotiation.

You can check the SDP information in the INVITE / 200 OK  messages of the good and bad calls and compare the codecs, port information to get an idea.
