When we configure the DSP's on an MGCP voice gateway, are they utilized only for conference calls conducted during an SRST outage?
Just trying to be clear on what these are specifically allocated for.
If anyone out there knows, please share.
Thanks much!

Vicky

No, They are not used during SRST. They are only used during normal operation. Hardware conference bridge have to register with CCM, hence they cant function in SRST.

Hello and thank you for your post.
I thought that when the gateway was MGCP it got its conference call resources from the call manager? If we don't configure dsps for conferencing on an mgcp voice gateway would that keep the end users from being able to conduct conference calls when the gateway is in MGCP mode?
Please let me know.
Thank you.

You need to configure DSPs for conferencing. You do not have hardware conferencing in SRST mode.

It all depends, you can have a HW CFB on the router and use it, or not have it and use the SW CFB from CUCM.
You would need to look at the router config to determine what the dspfarm profiles look like and where are they being registered to find out what they're supposed to do.

Thank you!! The reason I ask this is we have a few small remote site SRST offices who are set up only with MPLS link to a cluster and they rely on a different site for the use of the voice PRI. This remote site has no local dialtone. In this case they are set up with only no conferencing DSP's and I am concerned that we may have made a mistake here. They can rely on external resouces to allow this office to conduct conference calls, correct?
Thank you again.

Hi Vicky,
Thse phones at the SRST site have to rely on the sofware conference resources on the CUCM or hardware conference resources at some other site(registered to the CUCM) since no conferencing is configured at the remote site gateway.
Hope that helps

The best practice is to have media resources as close as possible to the users who will need them. However due to resources, budget, etc you might need to use these from other site. You would need to look at the CUCM config from those phones to determine where they are getting the resources from. There is really no way to tell if that's a mistake or if that's the way this was designed by whoever deployed this.
