Root access on the CP-8851

Hi guys,

is there any possibility to gain access to the root account on the CP-8851 from the 88xx series?

I tried all possible ways, all I got was the debug shell, not even a regular shell.

The Phone is running the SIP 10.2 firmware.

Moreover, the AUX port gives a lot of debugging information but the TX line seems to be disabled, so I cannot send anything to the phone.

Does anyone have any information on this?

I'd be so thankful if anyone can help me with this.

Thanks!

Alex

Why do you need to get root access ? The best that you will get is a debug shell.

I need root access because Cisco managed to break NTP (discussed in another post). So there is absolutely no way of setting the time without CUCM. As I'm using the phone with the SIP load, this is a problem for me.

So what are you using this phone with ? 3rd party server ?

Yes. Working fine except for the date / time setting.

You would need to edit the config file being pushed to the phone. You cannot have root access to the Phone OS without TAC and/or DE intervention taken the fact that it is even possible or not.

I've tried that, the XXX.cnf.xml is loaded successfully, the NTP address is set properly, the phone is doing an NTP request to the server, the server responds with the current time, but the phone seems to ignore it. As I said before, this was already discussed in another topic.

Have you tried adding Olson support ?

Tried already, with no success.

If this phone is covered under contract, you can open up a TAC case and have them verify things.

It's not under contract. I'll be switching to another brand, as Cisco cannot even handle such a ridiculous small thing as NTP or manual time setting...

Anyway, thank you for your quick replies!

Cisco isn't that bad :)
It's just that sometimes additional resources are required to look into things. Not having the device under a contract limits this. It might be a really small tweak to get it working but since you have tried all that I advised and taken the fact that everything including Olson was configured correctly, I advised TAC involvement.
