I had a similar error with the Media Master Java applet on Unity Connection 8.6. It turned out to be the JRE version (Java 7 update 9) running on my PC. I downgraded back to Java 6 update 36 and it started working again.
Since you're running traditional Unity you may want to try this from the Unity server. If it works there you know it's a client-side issue. If it doesn't work on the server either it's time to open a TAC SR.
