I cannot add a user to unity connection because when I do I get the following message. Cannot add user duplicate mailbox user ID. When I do a user search either by dn,alias, description, etc there is no records found.Any ideas as to why this happens?

Hi Tim,
Sounds like you're running into the following defect:
http://tools.cisco.com/Support/BugToolKit/search/getBugDetails.do?method=fetchBugDetails&bugId=CSCta76014
Symptom: When trying to add a user on a clustered system, it fails with the error message: Duplicate mailbox id. A mailbox with that id already exists. Unable to create User even though the user has never existed on the system. Conditions: This can occur in a Cisco Unity Connection 7.x active/active cluster. Workaround: Any upgrade will resolve the issue. The upgrade process will reset the mailbox id sequences and in doing so will workaround this issue.
There is another workaround available which doesnt involve an upgrade and requires root access for which you will have to open a TAC case. I would suggest an upgrade to a more stable version than what you are currently running, which is a better bet anyday :-)

Thanks for the reply. I knew upgrading would fix this issue I guess I was just hoping for a easier quick fix which I have begun to fix out really dosent seem to exist in the cisco world! An upgrade is not a decision that I can make. I'm just the tech that has to make it work!!

Hi Tim,
In that case, please open a TAC case so the fixing can be done via root access.

Hi Tim,
I'll just add a note to the great info from our friend Harmit (+5 "H" )
I've had this happen before where I knew there was no way the alias
existed, but was getting the same error message. Here's what I did;
Let's say I'm setting up Bruce Moose and the alias is going to be bmoose.
When I enter bmoose during the config and go to save> receive the error>
Cannot add user duplicate mailbox user ID
I'll just go back and make it bmoose1>save and everything is cool
Once I'm complete I'll go back later and change the alias back to bmoose
and everthing is good to go
Has never caused any issues.
Cheers!
Rob

Brilliant stuff Rob (+5 without a doubt), never tried it but definitely worth a shot considering it came from you! :-)
