Update display name on cisco IP Phone 7962 problem

Hi all,

I am new to Cisco Unified Communications Solutions. I need to modify display name for one of my users.  I've read instructions @

http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/voice-unified-communications/unified-communications-manager-version-60/111443-bat-update-display-00.html

I exported all phones to  CSV file and removed all the other entries, leaving only 1 line with user that I wanted to modify.  I modified all entries that showed users original name, not just Alerting Name Ascii & Ascii Display.  I've uploaded this file and performed Insert Phones command with override the existing configuration.  All looked well, no errors.

I've checked users phone and on my phone and his original name is still there.  I've exported all phones one more time and no changes have been made to the files that I've modified in my uploaded file.

Please let me know what could be causing my updates not to be processed.

Hi there,

Good stuff!

Let's say the DN/number in question is 4444 and we are trying to change the name display from John Doe to Bob Uncle.

"these modified steps are an excerpt from another tech note"

From CUCM Administration

  1. Device --> Phone
  2. Change search parameter to Directory Number and add the DN you want to change (in our example enter 4444. Click Find.
  3. Click on the Device Name in the search results (if you see more than one result for 4444 let us know).
  4. Click on the Line number in Association Information in the Phone Configuration Screen.
  5. Scroll to the bottom of the of the Directory Number Configuration page and change Display (Internal Caller ID) & ASCII Display (Internal Caller ID) to Bob Uncle
  6. also change Description, Alerting Name, and ASCII Alerting Name to Bob Uncle under Directory Number Information as well (at top of page)
  7. Click Save
  8. Click Apply

Cheers!

Rob

Hi there,

You should not need to use BAT to make this kind of change unless you are doing it for many phones at once but that may be another discussion as your method should work as well :)

Is the number you are trying to change the name on a "shared DN/number" ie: does it appear on other phones? When you say you checked/tested from your phone do you mean you called and were called by the number in question to see what name comes up on the display? Or do you mean you see the old name still beside a line button on your phone?

If you can let us know and maybe give the actual number/name in question here we should be able to figure this out.

Cheers!

Rob

Hi Rob,

Thank you very much for your response. I found the information at Cisco website and they said it would be the best solution.

The number I am trying to modify is for one person and shows up only on one phone but 2 lines.

I tried dialing the extension from my phone to see what my phone would be showing as display name.  I also went over to users desk to see if his phone would show different display name and also tried calling another number to see how incoming call from this number would be displayed.  In all instances it still shows the original name.

Can you recommend any other way to modify just 1 user and not entire userbase?

Hi Rob,

Thank you very much for your answer.  It worked 100% and I was able to modify the name name across 2 of his extensions.

If you're ever in NYC I owe you a drink :)

Hi, you might help me with my problem. I want to update the extension names of our CISCO IP Phone 7914 here in our office but I don't have CUCM software to update. Is there any way I can download this CUCM and change our phone extensions names being displayed? Or can I do it online? I appreciate your help guys!!!

Claire,

If you don't have CUCM, to what system are phones registering?

(And may I suggest that you start a new thread with your issue rather than continuing here? You'll get more eyeballs on the issue that way.)

Hi there,

You are most welcome my friend! Calgary is a long ways from NYC but maybe we'll have a virtual CSC cocktail together :)

Cheers!

Rob

You never know when you might end up in NYC ;)
