Hi,
I am trying to configure SNMPv3 on ios-xr 7.9.21, and I am a bit confused about the role of the community string in SNMPv3, I thought that v3 had an user based model and that community_strings were a SNMP v1/2 concept but when I try to enter the server host with this CLI:
snmp-server host 10.20.30.40 informs version 3 priv [community_string]
XR expects me to define a community string. The SNMP manager (EPNM) doesn't even ask for itwhen adding the SNMPv3 credentials of the device so my best guess is that in this instance community_string equals the SNMPv3 username. Is this correct?

check different SNMP configuration on different IOS but most of them to be similar as example below from my notes :
snmp-server view ViewDefault iso included
snmp-server group GrpMonitoring v3 priv read ViewDefault
snmp-server user UserJustMe GrpMonitoring v3 auth sha AuthPass1 priv aes 128 PrivPass2
The SNMP manager (EPNM) - never used by myself - but above config works with any snmp agent

Hello,
SNMPv3 uses the concept of Groups and Users. You are correct in that the String for v3 is the Community String for v1/2 or user for v3. This is also for backwards compatibility
