RME with CSM?

All,

Have spent the last couple of days playing around with CSM4.1 in advance of formal testing and deployment.

To set the scene we already use LMS (currently LMS3.01 although looking to upgrade) and familiar with the functionality of RME to deal with inventory/config management etc.

My question is what is the purpose/use of RME with Cisco Security Manager?

The documentation suggests you can either:

  • Install RME on same server as CSM
  • Configure CSM to use RME on another server (e.g. the LMS one)

However it all seems a little pointless. Initially installed RME on the CSM server (as version of RME on LMS is so old now).....but...

CSM doesn't seem to use the RME DCR for anything, indeed you have to add the device into CSM manually (or export from DCR and import into CSM).

CSM doesn't seem to use any of the RME configuration or inventory.

AUS deals with the software updates.

So I uninstalled RME and left CSM without any RME and can't find any noticable loss of functionality.

So back to my original question, what is the purpose/use of RME with Cisco Security Manager?

Thanks

Mike

If you have RME already, then don't install it since it duplicating efforts with LMS functionality. Some people don't have CSM and LMS in their environment. So the thinking was to provide RME for inventory management, device configuration management, software image management, change audit services, and syslog analysis.
