how can I connect a cucm to PSTN through E1/PRI?

Hi buddies,

How can I connect CUCM 11.x to PSTN through a E1 link? Do I need to a voice gateway? if it is, which IOS is more compatible with CUCM 11.x and which protocol is more better ( SIP, H.323 or MGCP)?

If there is a documentation for implementing such scenario, I would be very appreciate for referring to it.

Thanks in advance,

BR.

Hi Majid,

yes, you can use the E1 to connect to PSTN using a voice gateway. The choice of protocol depends upon your requirement. While all of these protocols are capable of handling normal voice traffic and features there may be certain applications and feature requirements in your setup which may mandate a specific protocol. You may however reference the following docs for configuring PRI once you decide on the same

http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/voice/media-gateway-control-protocol-mgcp/23966-mgcp-pri-cm.html

http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/ios-xml/ios/voice/h323/configuration/15-mt/voi-h323-15-mt-book/voi-h323-cfg-gateways.html

If this is your first implementation i would suggest involving your local Cisco Acct team for their inputs.

You will definitely need a voice gateway. Refer to below Matrix in order to choose the IOS version, should be pretty much same for version 11 as well:

Which is better protocol?? To be honest you will first need to understand all of these and then decide which one you should go for and why. All of these are standards and work pretty well from CM perspective. MGCP on one hand is primarily controlled from CM making the Administrator to do less work  compared to H.323 and SIP wherein you will need to create Dial peers, rules etc on VGW in addition to the configuration on CM but then there are other benefits of using them over MGCP

http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/voice/gateway-protocols/70628-h323-mgcp-compare.html

Depending what protocol you go ahead with, simply do a google search for the related configuration and will find lot of stuff on the web.

Personally, I would do SIP. MGCP is finicky, H.323 isn't too easy to read in the logs, and SIP isn't too chatty while also being very easy to read in the logs.
