N7K Licensing

Hi,

We are on the verge of buying a pair of N7Ks with FabricPath enabled modules. There are still a few questions we did not get answered, yet.

1. Can we create and route VLANs between 7Ks when we only have the F248XP-25 modules installed ?

2. When do we need to buy M-Boards, for what functionality ?

3. Which routing protocols are available in the basic configuration with the Advanced Layer 2 license available ?

Regards, Gilles

1. Yes, F2 modules can do routing.

2. M boards are required if you have many-many routes and/or need 40/100 Gbps connectivity.

3. None / none. The LAN Enterprise Package contains the routing protocols, which are:

  • IP routing
    • OSPFv2 and v3 (IPv4 and IPv6)
    • IS-IS (IPv4)
    • BGP (IPv4 and IPv6)
    • EIGRP (IPv4 and IPv6)
  • IP Multicast
      • PIM: Sparse, Bidir, ASM, and SSM modes (IPv4 and IPv6)
      • MSDP (IPv4)
  • PBR (IPv4 and IPv6)
  • GRE tunnels

The Enhanced Layer 2 Package contains FabricPath and Pong. There are no overlapping between the provided features of the licenses.

More about licensing can be found in the NX-OS datasheet.

Andras, please correct me if I am wrong.  The M-series card is still required for OTV, correct?  Was my understanding the F1/F2 did not support OTV, but that may be outdated knowledge.

Ed

Yes, M-seies card is required for OTV, LISP, MPLS as these features are not support on F series cards.
