Hi,
I have a 819 Router (C819HG-U-K9) and I'm trying to get the 3G connection up. I have followed this thread which was a great help but so far I'm still unable to get a connection to my carrier:
https://supportforums.cisco.com/message/3824614#3824614
The 3G cell network seems to be ok:
#sh cell 0 network
Current Service Status = Normal, Service Error = None
Current Service = Combined
Packet Service = HSPA (Attached)
Packet Session Status = Inactive
Current Roaming Status = Home

PLMN Selection = Automatic
Registered PLMN = , Abbreviated =
Service Provider = YES OPTUS
I can even send and receive SMS's on the cell network.
Our carrier (Exetel) does not require a username/password so they are not set in the profile:
#show cellular 0 profile 1

Shameless bump on my part. Has anyone a few clues for me?
01-10-2013 03:59 PM
Hello Tom,
Try changing the encapsulation on your Cellular0 interface from ppp to slip, i.e.
interface Cell0
encapsulation slip
The documentation appears to indicate that for the basic communication with the cellular controller, we need to speak plain serial data which is exactly the SLIP. Then please post the output of the debug again. Thank you!
Best regards,
Peter

Hi Peter,
Thanks for your reply.
I did try this before but got an unexpected response:
muddy#configure terminal
Enter configuration commands, one per line. End with CNTL/Z.
muddy(config)#interface cellular 0
muddy(config-if)#encapsulation slip
Cellular0: Only PPP encapsulation supported
muddy(config-if)#
Seems I can set slip on this interface. Any idea why? Is there some other configuration I need to make first?
I suppose this information is useful:
muddy#show inventory

Is this an HSPA+7 modem? Shoul I be using a different chat-script?
Kind regards,
Tom

Ok,
I've worked out this is not an HSPA+ modem.
With the chat script:

It appears to make a connection but I get no IP Address:

Hi,
Well I seem to be making more progress but I'm still stuck. I remind you that my carrier expects an APN only; no username or password are expected. With some routing and a ping I see the following:

Hi All,
I've worked out that the peer is looking for a username on my router called UMTS_CHAP_SRVR:

Configuring a username:
username UMTS_CHAP_SRVR
has done the trick!
This helped immensely:

Thanks to Peter Paluch for his tip. Even though you didn't 'answer' my question, you gave me some focus. I would give you some credits if I knew how.
Thanks and I hope this helps someone else.
Kind regards,

Hi Guys,
I had the same issue with a separate 3G module on 888G.
Thought to share as below worked for me,
cellular 0 gsm profile create 1 telstra.internet chap '' ''
chat-script INTERNET "" "ATDT*99*1#" TIMEOUT 30 "CONNECT"
interface Cellular0
no ip address
encapsulation ppp
dialer in-band
dialer pool-member 1
async mode interactive
interface Dialer1
ip address negotiated
encapsulation slip
dialer pool 1
dialer idle-timeout 0
dialer string INTERNET
dialer persistent
!
ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 Dialer1
line 3
script dialer INTERNET

I`m posting this for future reference.
I encountered the same problem as _yzenezy_
Configuration was as follows:
chat-script DIAL "" "ATDT*99***1#" TIMEOUT 30 "CONNECT" ! interface Cellular0 ip address negotiated ip mtu 1530 ip nat outside encapsulation ppp dialer in-band dialer pool-member 1 async mode interactive ! interface Dialer1 mtu 1530 ip address negotiated ip nat outside ip virtual-reassembly in encapsulation ppp load-interval 30 dialer pool 1 dialer idle-timeout 0 either dialer string DIAL dialer persistent delay initial 10 dialer persistent delay 10 dialer-group 1 no cdp enable ! dialer-list 1 protocol ip permit !
line 3
script dialer DIAL
cellular 0 gsm profile create 1 MY_APN
There was no connection
debug ppp negotiation showed this
*Feb 6 06:56:37.903: Ce0 PPP: Phase is AUTHENTICATING, by the peer *Feb 6 06:56:37.903: Ce0 CHAP: Redirect packet to Ce0 *Feb 6 06:56:37.903: Ce0 CHAP: I CHALLENGE id 1 len 35 from "UMTS_CHAP_SRVR" *Feb 6 06:56:37.903: Ce0 LCP: State is Open *Feb 6 06:56:37.903: Ce0 CHAP: Unable to authenticate for peer *Feb 6 06:56:37.903: Ce0 PPP DISC: User failed CHAP authentication
I tried configuring hostname AND password on my dialer interface as _yzenezy_ said:
interface Dialer1 ppp authentication chap callin ppp chap hostname UMTS_CHAP_SRVR ppp chap password 0 UMTS_CHAP_SRVR
Since the connection was unsuccessful, i continued with removing hostname and PAF it connected! So, the final config on my dialer interface is:
interface Dialer1 mtu 1530 ip address negotiated ip nat outside ip virtual-reassembly in encapsulation ppp load-interval 30 dialer pool 1 dialer idle-timeout 0 either dialer string skripta dialer persistent delay initial 10 dialer persistent delay 10 dialer-group 1 ppp authentication chap callin ppp chap password 0 UMTS_CHAP_SRVR no cdp enable
Profile 1 = ACTIVE*
--------
PDP Type = IPv4
PDP address = 10.169.129.129
Access Point Name (APN) = MY_APN
Authentication = None
Username:
Password:
Hope this helps someone out there!
Cheers,
Tom
