Channelized DS3 in 3845

Hey everyone.  I am upgrading from an old 7204VXR to a 3845.  I am running a DS3 in the 7200, channelized into 28 point to point T1's.  I need to break them all out into individual Serial interfaces on the new 3845, like I have on the 7200, but I don't know the correct commands.

On the 7200, I have these commands:

controller T3 1/0

cablelength 150

t1 1 channel-group 0 timeslots 1-24

t1 2 channel-group 0 timeslots 1-24

t1 3 channel-group 0 timeslots 1-24

t1 4 channel-group 0 timeslots 1-24

t1 5 channel-group 0 timeslots 1-24

t1 6 channel-group 0 timeslots 1-24

t1 7 channel-group 0 timeslots 1-24

t1 8 channel-group 0 timeslots 1-24

t1 9 channel-group 0 timeslots 1-24

t1 10 channel-group 0 timeslots 1-24

t1 11 channel-group 0 timeslots 1-24

t1 12 channel-group 0 timeslots 1-24

t1 13 channel-group 0 timeslots 1-24

t1 14 channel-group 0 timeslots 1-24

t1 15 channel-group 0 timeslots 1-24

t1 16 channel-group 0 timeslots 1-24

t1 17 channel-group 0 timeslots 1-24

t1 18 channel-group 0 timeslots 1-24

t1 19 channel-group 0 timeslots 1-24

t1 20 channel-group 0 timeslots 1-24

t1 21 channel-group 0 timeslots 1-24

t1 22 channel-group 0 timeslots 1-24

t1 23 channel-group 0 timeslots 1-24

t1 24 channel-group 0 timeslots 1-24

t1 25 channel-group 0 timeslots 1-24

t1 26 channel-group 0 timeslots 1-24

t1 27 channel-group 0 timeslots 1-24

t1 28 channel-group 0 timeslots 1-24

But on the 3845, it will not allow me to use the "t1" command.  What do I need to do to channelize my DS3?  I am using the NM-1T3/E3 card in slot 4, and have set up "card type t3" (Controller T3 4/0).

So I only have the 1 serial interface by default, but I need 28.  This is what I currently have:

card type t3 4

controller T3 4/0

cablelength 150

interface Serial4/0

no ip address

dsu bandwidth 44210

no cdp enable

I'm sure this is something simple, but it's outside of my standard operations.

Thanks

I have been reading around, and it seems that maybe I can't channelize a DS3 using the NM-1T3/E3 card?  And maybe I have to get an NM-1A-T3/E3 card?  If so, that' too bad since that card is about 20x more money.  Anyway, if anyone could confirm if I have the right card or not, I would appreciate it.  Thanks in advance.

Hello Jake,

In this case, the NM-1T3/E3 does not allow to configure the individual T1s as you did it in the 7200. On the other hand, the NM-1A-T3/E3 is an ATM card so I am not sure if that is what you are looking for.

ATM1/0 is down, line protocol is down

  Hardware is CX27470 ATM DS3

  MTU 4470 bytes, sub MTU 4470, BW 44209 Kbit/sec, DLY 190 usec,

     reliability 0/255, txload 1/255, rxload 1/255

  Encapsulation ATM, loopback not set

  Encapsulation(s): AAL5

1023 maximum active VCs, 0 current VCCs

  VC Auto Creation Disabled.

VC idle disconnect time: 300 seconds

Last input never, output never, output hang never

Last clearing of "show interface" counters never

Input queue: 0/75/0/0 (size/max/drops/flushes); Total output drops: 0

  Queueing strategy: Per VC Queueing

  5 minute input rate 0 bits/sec, 0 packets/sec

  5 minute output rate 0 bits/sec, 0 packets/sec

0 packets input, 0 bytes, 0 no buffer

     Received 0 broadcasts, 0 runts, 0 giants, 0 throttles

     0 input errors, 0 CRC, 0 frame, 0 overrun, 0 ignored, 0 abort

     0 packets output, 0 bytes, 0 underruns

0 output errors, 0 collisions, 1 interface resets

     0 unknown protocol drops

0 output buffer failures, 0 output buffers swapped out

A SPA-2XCT3/DS0 could be a good option for you for it is a Channelized T3 shared port adapter but the problem here is that a 3845 does not support that module. It can be used in the following platforms:

• Cisco 7304 Router

• Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series Switches

• Cisco 7600 Series Routers

• Cisco 12000 Series Routers

• Cisco XR 12000 Series Routers

• Cisco ASR 1000 Series Router

• Cisco ASR 9000 Series Router (4 Port Only)

I hope it helps.

Hello Jake,

consider keeping the old 7204VXR in place for this job or you should move to ASR 1000

There is no channelized version of network module for the C3845, as far as I know I have made a seach recently with no result.

Hope to help

Giuseppe

That's a real bummer.  An ASR 1000 is definitely overkill.  I suppose the good news is that I will eventually get rid of my DS3.  I may keep a few individual point to point T1's, but I could terminate those in the 3845.  For now, I may change the 3845 to my new core router, and keep the 7200 in place specifically to terminate the DS3, and nothing else.

In any case, the 3845 is also an old model, now discontinued. As Giuseppe indicated, you should look a newer equipment for your needs, like an NPE G1 or G2 for your "old 7200", that are of very high performances, and compatible with channellized T3.

Hello Jake ,

Can you please let me know what card you were using on the 7200 to perform channelised T3 ?

Appreciate quick response.
