OSPF Database & routing table

Why would there be discrepancies between the ospf database and the entries in the routing table. If I do show ip ospf database there are a significant number of entries that are not shown but are in the network list under router ospf....

Why would this be? We are having occasional connectivity problems with 2 of the subnets that are not in the ospf database but are in the network router list.

Any help you can give is appreciated.

Hi Sudeep

I can understand why the networks would only show when you issue the command show ip ospf database now and not when you do show ip ospf database

but i still think I have a problem in that the networks do not show on the other routers in the ospf area

Can you please provide one IP which u are facing issue with and provide the show ip route from both source router and  problem router.

Also from both routers (source and the router on which u are not receiving the route), get this command output

show ip ospf data router

One of the ip addresses we have issues with is 10.115.21.200

We have users on one of our remote sites who need access to this PC to support the software on there and they have probelms connecting.  However other devices on the 10.115.21.0 subnet can be reached without issue.

The remote WAN connection comes in via router 2 (192.168.162.2) and the vlan for 10.115.21.0 is also on router 2.

from the remote site I cannot ping 10.115.21.200

Since its a /24 subnet and u are able to reacxh other IPs in this subnet, the routing seems to be fine. Moreover you are reaching till router2.  Can you please try doing a reverse trace from 10.115.21.200 towards the source IP.  Check on Host 10.115.21.200, that the default gateway is set as Router-2.

Please let me know the result.

The gateway is correct and set by DHCP, also the reverse trace gets to router 2 then out onto the WAN but fails on reaching the end device.

I thisk we are getting lost here, I am trying to find out why some of the networks in the ospf area are not showing on all the routers in the ospf area.  I can now understand why the wouldnt appear when show ip sopf database is run on the host router, but then I think they should show on the other routers in the ospf area.

Am I correct in thinking this or not?

If they should appear then why are they not appearing?  I want to exclude this as being a reason why we have this connectivity issue.

Hi Alex,

The lnk state DB should be the same across all routers within an area.  The problem which u are facing, seems to be something else.  And even on other routers, you have to see it using the same command, not just the host router.

Thanks for all your help, I didnt think the ospf problem was necessarily the cause of my problems.  However I need to know whay the ospf is not correct.

In looking at the routing table that you posted and at the results in traceroute I am not sure that I am seeing a routing problem. I wonder if there is any access list filtering on the router or any security policy on the host that is not responding to traceroute.

I am not convinced it is a routing issue either but we have no access lists in place and there isnt a security policy on the end device that would stop connectivity.  Some devices on one subnet can connect and others cant so it is a really random fault.

However during the fault finding we can accross the missing entries on the ospf table and I want teo exclude that as being the issue.  I think I can now say it isnt the cause but would like to know whay we have missing entries in the ospf database.

Hi Alex,

OSPA cannot be a cause of reachability issue here  bcoz, other IPs of the subnet are getting reached.  We are advertising  as /24 and if it was a routing issue, entire subnet would have got  affected.

Do you still feel we have missing entries in OSPF database.  Can you give more details of the missing entry , like "show ip route <>, show ip ospf database etc

On router 2 I cannot see the fowwowing networks when i do the sh ip ospf database command

these are not all of them but show that some networks do not appear in the ospf

Looking at the output of sh ip route on router 2 it says that it has learned 10.115.63.0/24 via ospf but this does not show when I do sh ip ospf datbase.
