Hi, I want to Upgrade my IOS version Catalyst 4500 L3 Switch Software (cat4500e-UNIVERSALK9-M), Version 03.05.02.E RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1). Can I upgrade it to directly 3.11.xE with VSS enabled. Or which version is stable?
The ROMMON needs to be upgraded first. The IOS gets upgraded next. Read the Release Notes: There are detailed steps on how to upgrade the ROMMON and IOS in a single reboot.
How much time would it need for the reboot. Does it effect the services. If yes then how much time is required if 2 of the devices have to be upgraded to new IOS version.
If you have a Quad supervisor, it will take 1-2hours approximately - this includes boot time. - plan for 4 hours maintenance if anything required to fix.
When VSS ISSU upgade - keep in mind the single-homed device will have downtime.
Read the Release Notes very carefully. To get to 3.11.X the supervisor cards (all of them) needs to have the ROMMON upgraded individually otherwise the supervisor cards will "refuse" to load the new IOS. The last time I upgraded the ROMMON of a Sup7E, it took around 45 minutes before the chassis became pingable.

is this agood solution because this ROMMON 15.1(1r)SG6 is backward compatible till 3.3.xE versions.
