2511 unable to boot ERR: Invalid chip id 0x80B5 (reversed = 0x1AD ) detected in System flash

I posted earlier about a 2511 access server I purchased on eBay and it looks like I will need to figure this out on my own since the eBay seller has just blown me off.  If I can get this router to work I don't mind spending some  $'s, on it as the whole refund procedure with eBay without the seller cooperation is a nightmare.

Here is the first error message I get almost immediately:

ERR: Invalid chip id 0x80B5 (reversed = 0x1AD ) detected in System flash

From my research it looks like this error can be caused by an outdated boot rom and upgraded flash, here is my boot rom information:

ð

System Bootstrap, Version 4.14(9.1), SOFTWARE

Copyright (c) 1986-1994 by Cisco Systems

2500 processor with 16384 Kbytes of main memory

I then get this message when the boot begins:

Illegal IP keyword - domain

Illegal IP keyword - http

Illegal IP keyword - classless

Loading c2500-c-l.123-26.bin at 0x3000040, size = 11118184 bytes [OK]

F3: 10453872+664280+728400 at 0x3000060

At this point it looks like it's going to boot until it gets to this line and then it hangs completely.

%SNMP-5-COLDSTART: SNMP agent on host Terminal is undergoing a cold start

I have found, again on eBay, a upgraded boot rom (IGS-RXBOOT (2500)Cisco Boot-2500= BootRom for 2500 Series 11.0(10c)XB1 Boot ROMs)

Do you think that simply replacing the boot rom will fix the issue?  I hate to just start throwing money at something in the dark.
Any advice would be appreiated.

Howard,

Replacing the boot rom does not grantee that the problem goes away.  2500 series routers are very old, very slow, but very cheap on Ebay.  You are really better off spending that money buying another one.

If you are building a lab, I would not use 2500 series, use 2600 or 2600XM.  They are not as old as 2500 and also come with 10/100 interfaces.  You can also load fairly newer version of IOS on the XM series.  The XM is a little higher, but it will serve you better.

Thanks for the quick reply.  I have a 2620XM, what do I need to turn it into an access server?

If you want to use the device as an access server only, than I have to send you back to use a 2508 or a 2511 as an access server and than use the XM for other functions.  Even though the 2500s are slow, but for access server they work just work fine.
