I have a CISCO2921. I am not able to bring up its gi0/1 interface. It stays down down.
From http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/routers/access/1900/software/configuration/guide/backup.html#wpxref16106, it looks like its gi0/1 interface is different from its gi0/0 or gi0/2 interfaces.
I know that interface is not coming up because of "no media" below.
Router#sh int gi0/1 | i media
Auto Duplex, Auto Speed, media type is no media
I have tried media rj-45 and media sfp which have also not worked.
The other end of this link is ethernet handoff. What is it that I have to do for the link to come up? If I change the connection to gi0/2, I think that will work because I see this for gi0/2:
Router#sh int gi0/2 | i media
Auto Duplex, Auto Speed, media type is RJ45
But why is it not working for gi0/1?

Did you try moving the link to gig0/1?
Get the following outputs
1. Show inv
2. show diag
3. show int gi 0/1
4. show int gi 0/2

Yes the link is patched to gi0/1 currently and is not coming up.

Is the other end supports auto-negotiation of speed ? if not hardcore the duplex and speed setting on the interface
try moving to gi 0/2 if this doesn't help
10-03-2012 09:51 PM
That's what my original question was.
I know it will come up if I move it to gi0/2, but what is it that I have to do for the connection at gi0/1 to come up?
10-03-2012 10:00 PM
Right now don't assume "media type is no media" is the reason for your link not coming up. This port is the one which supports both Rj45 and SFP. the other 2 ports only RJ45
Gi 0/1, you need to configure media-type as Rj45 because your link is copper. You need to configure duplex and speed, if the other end is not supporting auto-negotiation.
If this doesn't work try moving the link to gi 0/2 and check if it works
10-03-2012 10:22 PM
I had tried configuring media type as rj45/sfp and it did not work. Tried different speed/duplex settings as well.
I will see if moving the link over to gi0/2 helps.
10-03-2012 10:27 PM
Yes. Please move to gi 0/2 and check
10-17-2012 10:14 PM
I have moved the link to gi0/2, but still the link does not come up
10-17-2012 10:22 PM
Hi Kashis,
Some gigabit interfaces on Cisco support RJ-45 (copper) and SFP (fiber) operation.
The command media-type has to be used to switch between the two media types.
The example below shows how to configure the media-type with this command.
interface Gigabit0/1
media-type rj45
(UTP)
or
interface Gigabit0/1
media-type sfp
(fiber)
and then try
Regards
Please rate if it helps.

gi0/2 does not have media-type option...gi0/1 has, but my link is on gi0/2 now.
