3650 Switch Stack

I had strange issue with 3650 switch stack....here is what happened-I planned to add 5th switch to 3650 stack of  4 switches today. Prior to going on the location, I provisioned 'Switch 5 provisioned switch type' to the stack and set the priority 1 (used default). I knew ahead of time that I didn't have same software version as the stack. I thought after I setup/configure/plug everything, I would have an opportunity to run 'software auto-upgrade' and everything would be fine. However, once I had the switch mounted and stack-wise cables plugged and turned the 5th switch ON, I saw message on the master switch 1(using console) 'restarting services'  and than I waited thinking stack need to reboot or must be doing something....waited for 10 mins, lost all the activities light on the ports and whole stack went down!!!!! After almost 14 mins, I decided to take the 5th switch out and rebooted the each switch starting from the master first. After switches came back up, Switch 1 became 2 and switch 2 became 4 and whole lot of mess!!!!!!

Somehow they got renumbered hence created more problems.....which we fixed by redoing the running config again.

What would cause this issue? Did I miss something in my steps? Any input in the would be very helpful for me to understand this.

lets say if it was

If a new stack member is powered on and then the stacking cable (even just one) gets connected, THE ENTIRE STACK reboots.  This is not a bug.  This is how it was designed.

This is the reason I always recommend/remind everyone to POWER OFF the new stack member FIRST before attaching the stacking cable.

When installing a new stack, I aways power up the stack master FIRST.  Then I power up, in the order I choose, which is the next stack member by their order.  Once the entire stack is powered up and joins the stack, I configure the stack priority.

I suspect Switch 5 had power when the stacking cables were attached.

thanks for the response Leo.....I don't recall having power on on my 5th switch but lets say if it was...can you explain why this switch will almost take over the whole stack when it has low priority and it is setup as provisioned switch?

I want to renumber my switches so they start with 1 and ends with 5. What do you  think best way to do this task without creating more issues? If I renumber 2 to 1, would this create any issues with individual port configuration (change anything in run config)?

When renumbering a switch to a different switch number, the switch will have to be rebooted.
