3750 stack - replacing members 3750g with 3750e

Currently I run a 3750 stack with the following members:

sh run | incl provisi

switch 1 provision ws-c3750g-24ts-1u

switch 2 provision ws-c3750g-24ts-1u

switch 3 provision ws-c3750g-24ts-1u

switch 4 provision ws-c3750g-24ts-1u

switch 5 provision ws-c3750g-24ts-1u

switch 6 provision ws-c3750g-24ts-1u

switch 7 provision ws-c3750g-24ts-1u

switch 8 provision ws-c3750e-48td

Switch 6 and 7 needs to be replaced with a new ws-c3750e-48td.

My plan is to do this is follows:

Upgrade ios version on new switch to match version running on stack.

Provision the new switch as switch 9

Copy the interface config from g6/01-24 and g7/0/1-24 to g9/0/1-48

Poweroff switch 6 and 7, disconnected stackwise cables, remove switches from rack.

Add switch 9, connect stackwise cables and powerup new switch.

Renumber switch 9 to 6.

Is this the right way to do this ?

1.  First thing, is to copy the unadulturated configuration of switch 6 and 7;

2.  Ensure that 8 is cabled properly back to the rest of the stack;

3.  Power down the switches 6 and 7;

4.  Issue the command "NO switch 6 provision ws-c3750g-24ts-1u";

5.  Issue the command "NO switch 7 provision ws-c3750g-24ts-1u";

6.  Issue the command "switch 6 provision ws-c3750e-48td"

7.  Cable up new 3750E switch into the place of switch 6 and power up; and

8.  Copy the config over.

NOTE:  I am not fan of having a stack of 6 or more.  There were cases in my experience that having 6 or more 3750 in a stack can cause lags that gives you the spine-chilling thought that your command just crashed the entire stack.

BUT I am replacing two ws-c3750g-24ts-1u's with 1 ws-c3750e-48td.

Any thoughts on this ?

Hi, about 2 years ago i merged a 3750g stack with an 3750e switch

I seemed (who reads notes, right?) i needed the universal firmware for the e switch and the ipbase firmware for the g switches to get them stacked. Same version for both. Its long ago, but maybe it helps some.

Swicth 5 is the E switch.

I agree with Leo, you can follow the steps to achieve what you are looking for.

And if you have stack morethan 6 or 6 it will cause other issues like stack hang, slowness and etc.,
So better keep 5 switches in one stack to be best performance.

Thanks for your help !

Here is what I did:

renumber new switches to 6 and 7

copy the interface config g6/0/1 to 7/0/28 from the old switches to notepad

powered off switch 6 en 7 and disconnected stackwise cables, remaining stack stays in service.

remove provisioning switch 6 and 7 from config.

add new provisioning for new switches.

replace earlier interface config from notepad.

physically replace old switches 6 and 7 with new ones in rack.

connect stackwise cables to new switches

power up new switches, first 6, then 7.

monitor console as switches are being added to existing stack.

write mem.
