Amber LED Flashing - 3560x

Jeff Harned

Hello All,

I have to two 3560x switches setup in a LAN.  I am using port 24 (VLAN 1) on both switches using a crossover cable for

Admn control.  Port 24 on one shows shows a continouslyy flashing amber port status LED while the other connection to port 24 of the other

switch is green.  I am able though to communicate with both switches.   I did perform both show interface and show interfaces counter errors

commands on the switch but nothing was obvious indicating a issue.

Any help on why the one port is amber but I can still communicate with the switch?

Thanks.

Regards,

Jeff

Hi,

No need tor crossover cable. Just use a straight through cable to connect the switches together and test again.

Hi Reza,

Thanks for your reply but it made no difference.  I still have the amber status light on the one switch.

Thanks.

Jeff

Jeff,

Does the same thing happen if you use a different port (port 10, 11, etc..)?

Have you tried 'shut" and "no shut" the ports on both switches?

Can you post the config from both switches for these ports?

sh run int g0/24

also, what does the log show?

HTH

Hi Reza

I did the "no shut" commands on both ports: made no difference.
I moved to different ports on both switches: amber light is flashing on same switch/
different port.

The only initial configuration for port 24 on both switches is: "switchport mode access".

Thanks.

Regards,

Jeff

Hi Jeff,

what is in the logs?  show logging

Also, have you tried replacing the cable?

Reza

Hi Reza,

It's not the cables.  Attached are the logs for both switches.  Cisco4 is the switch with
the green status LED.  Cisco6 is the switch with the ambler status LED.  Port 24
is the issue.

Thanks.

Jeff

Jeff,

The logs looks clean.  Do both switches have the same version of IOS?

If I were to guess, this is a cosmetic bug since it is not effecting the production.

I have seen the same thing with fiber ports but not copper.

So, you may want to try and open a TAC case.  They will most likely ask you to upgrade the IOS.

And one more thing, can you try hard setting the ports on both switches to Gig?

speed 1000

HTH

Hi Reza,

Cisco4: C3560E software (C3560E-UNIVERSALK9-M), Version 12.2 (55) SE5.

Cisco6: C3560E software (C3560E-UNIVERSALK9-M), Version 15.0 (2) SE4.

Two questions:

What is a TAC?
How do you hard set the ports?

Thanks.

Regards,

Jeff

Jeff,

TAC is Cisco support.  You can open a ticket online at Cisco.com or call the 800 number.

to hard set the ports on both switches try this:

config t

inter gi0/24

speed 1000

duplex full

Please remember, if these switches are in production, issuing these commands will cause an outage.  So make sure it is done in a maintenance window.

Hi Reza,

I did to the ports as you suggested but it made no difference.

However, when I moved the end of the cable from the cisco4 switch  to other ports
on it the status LED went to green on the cisco6 switch!!
What could this indicate?

Thanks.

Regards,

Jeff

Hi Jeff,

Not sure what it could be. As I said before, this maybe a cosmetic bug.

Glad its all working now.

HTH

Hello Jeff,

Have you hardcoded the speed and duplex in these?

I think these ports supports Auto MDIX. If you have hardcoded them try using speed and duplex auto.

Also share the output of

sh interfaces transceiver properties for this port.

Thanks,

Madhu.

Hi Madhu,

The other post was from myself.  I thought it got lost...

Anyway, I do not know what MDIX is but I did the command as you stated and port 24

reads:

Adminisrtative Speed: auto
Administrative Duplex: auto
Administrative Auto-MDIX: on
Operational Speed: auto
Operational Duplex: auto
Operational Auto-MDIX: on

Thanks.

Regards,

Jeff

Ok. Looks like we have auto speed and duplex and auto MDIX.

Can you ensure we have same allowed vlan list also on both side of the link?

Thanks,

Madhu.
