Behavior of StackWise Switch During SUP Failure

From what I understand, the Catalyst 9400 series does not currently have quad-supervisor support when configured with StackWise Virtual. In the documentation, it states:

"The in-chassis standby Supervisors if available will be powered-off by the system during the StackWise Virtual conversion. In the event of failure, the failed supervisor has to be manually replaced. This limitation will be removed in the future software release."

I am able to confirm that the secondary C9400X-SUP-2XL in both of our C9410R are, indeed, powered-off, when they are configured with StackWise Virtual. The documentation says that the failed supervisor has to be manually replaced, but what happens if the switch is power-cycled? If the switch is powered on, again, would the second (previously powered-off) SUP become the active SUP for that device, and allow it to function properly? Does the second SUP need to be swapped into the failed SUP's slot before it can function properly? The documentation states "The supervisor module in each switch should be inserted in symmetrical slots." so I am assuming the SUP would, indeed, need to be moved to the other slot.

Also, is there any indication in the software roadmap as to when this limitation will be removed (allowing quad-sup support)?

Depends on how big the customer is, just about anyone can throw a roadmap date.  If the customer is very, very big, ask the Account Manager, SE or the PSS for a date to commitment this feature.

And don't forget, there will be severe-to-catastrophic bugs that comes along with a "day 1" feature release.  Always expect 1+1  (day 1 plus 1 year) year before a feature like this becomes stable enough for production.
