c9200l install add failed; boot to rommon

Thanks for reading.

I recovered a c9200l running 16.09.04.  I write erased successfully.  Verified the switch stack consisted of 1 single member (itself).  I then ran install add file usbflash0:cat9k_lite_iosxe.17.06.03.SPA.bin activate commit prompt-level none.  The process ran then stopped at rommon prompt switch:.  

The switch logged *Nov 1 17:22:02.934: %INSTALL-3-OPERATION_ERROR_MESSAGE: Switch 1 R0/0: install_engine: Failed to install_add_activate_commit package usbflash0:cat9k_lite_iosxe.17.06.03.SPA.bin, Error: install_add_activate_commit : System configuration has been modified. Either Save configuration and resubmit command or use interactive CLI to proceed without saving

I've tried booting from USB set BOOT=usbflash0:cat9k_lite_iosxe.16.09.04.SPA.bin (with the following files on USB)
299,574,284 cat9k_lite-rpbase.16.09.04.SPA.pkg
7,586,824 cat9k_lite-webui.16.09.04.SPA.pkg
3,101,708 cat9k_lite-srdriver.16.09.04.SPA.pkg
345,568,633 cat9k_lite_iosxe.16.09.04.SPA.bin

In each case, I'm dumped back to switch: prompt

Any idea where I went wrong and how to get back?

have you read the release notes before upgrading, do you have logs complete upgrade ?

can you post a complete boot, until you get the switch:

can you copy 17.6.3 bin file and try to boot from USB ? what is the error you get ? i may be thinking the bootloader upgraded I guess, that we can only make identify if you post complete boot process

The Install Mode command is not meant to be run from the USB thumb drive. 

If the switch is still in ROMMON, then boot the switch in Bundle Mode:  boot usbflash0:cat9k_lite_iosxe.17.06.03.SPA.bin

After the switch temporarily boots up the firmware, post the complete output to the command "dir" so we can check the contents of the flash before the next steps.

Hi guys,

Thank you both for replying.

I was able to bundle-mode boot from USB.  I was then able to copy the bin into flash and re-run the install command successfully.  The switch is un-bricked and ready for a new config & deployment.
