C950024y4c SVL link

Quick question. I am going to be prepping a 9500 stack and was curious if I did the initial config using some 100G dac cables to build the svl link I have in office but then the tech installing the switch used 40G qsfps for it, would that cause any issues since the ports would be the same just different optics.

Hey @volume51

Using different types of cables or optics (e.g., 100G DAC cables for initial configuration and 40G QSFP optics for the final installation) for the StackWise Virtual Link (SVL) on a Cisco Catalyst 9500 series switch can potentially cause issues if the configuration and hardware are not aligned.

Recommendations:

  1. If you plan to use 40G QSFP optics for the final installation, it is best to configure the SVL using the same optics during the initial setup to avoid any potential issues.
  2. If you must use 100G DAC cables for the initial configuration, make sure to update the port configuration to match the 40G QSFP optics when they are installed. This may involve manually setting the port speed to 40G.
  3. Always verify the compatibility of the optics and cables with your switch model and software version.

Hope This Helps!!!

@AshSe Thanks appreciate the response! This may be a dumb question but I would assume there is no way to preconfigure the  link and stack without having the two switches connected to each other?

Hey @volume51

Preconfiguring the StackWise Virtual Link and stack settings without physically connecting the switches is a valid and efficient approach, as long as you ensure that the configuration is consistent and correct on both switches. However, you won't be able to fully verify the stack until the physical connection is made. Once the switches are connected, verify the stack status and troubleshoot any issues if necessary.

Hope this helps!

I do not see any issue at all, its all change the configuration to right interface when moving from one interface to other interface.

make aware if this production do in the maintenance window.

Well the interface would stay the same, just swapping the type of sfp used from 100G Dac to a 40G qsfp

If so, I would not see any issue here. I have swapped Twinax cable with 10GB SFP before and confirmed it works in a live environment.
