Cannot type while connected with console (2960 switch)

Hey everyone,

I am studying for my CCNA and I have aquired a 2960 WS-C2960-24TT-L switch (used).

I am trying to acces the switch while conected to the console port.

Everything loads up, but when I get the "Press RETURN to get started!" I cannot do anything after, doesn't matter what key I am trying, nothing happens.

Here is the message I receive when it loads:

The only way I can do something is by going to express setup and have telnet on.

I am trying to configure it via console cable only for my studies.

which terminal emulator are you using ? Try Putty or TeraTerm, also make sure the settings match those outlined in the document below:

I have tried Putty and SecureCRT.

The settings are fine.

Also, when I am using telnet, i can control the switch perfectly fine.

It seems the issue is doing so with console cable only, I am clueless.

Hello,

which console cable are you using, the RJ-45 to RJ-45 rollover cable, or the RJ-45 to DB-9 ? If you are using the first, make sure it really IS a rollover cable (check the pinouts on both ends (1 and 3, and 2 and 6 are reversed).

I have attached 2 photos, showing my putty setting are good, and the cable I use.

I also attached a video of the switch loading.

I do not think there is an issue with the serial cable, or else I wouldn't be able to see the switch loading in the console.

I believe this is some switch configuration issue? Before the end, some lines said failed, perhapes it has something to do with it? I am really lost on this one.

i suspect 2 things here.

1. Physically something wrong - (where did you get this device from - refurbished ?)

2. Cable change and check

3. check the baud rate -  9600,8,none,1,none

the extreme way one fixed was below threads - I do not recommend. Since most of the function you can achieve over telnet or ssh, until you very keen to have a console.

1. I bought it from someone that used it for his studies as well. 

2. I don't think there is a cable issue, if there was, I wouldn't be able to view the console at all. Right?

3. settings are good.

Is there any chance the console port has been disable to receive any input and only send output? Is there an option like this?

I can telnet to the device and configure it, so I am able to do a command if there is one to fix it.

I have uploaded some photos above in my previous reply, can you check everything is fine?

Check to see if the baud rate is set to default on the switch. Under “line con 0” towards the end of your config, is there a speed setting? If so try this:

conf t
line con 0
speed 9600

The previous owner may have used xmodem to upload an iOS.

So I found out that the console cable I had was good, but the adapter to USB had something bad with it.

Long story short, the adapter was receiving data, not allowing to send data.

Bought a new console cable and everything worked.

Sorry for all the waste of time guys but, thanks for trying to help!
