Cisco 3850 Switch Stuck at Booting

Hi Guys,

So I have this switch on my deployment. It's on stack mode. Suddenly one of the stack members stopped working. Only SYST LED blinking. I tried to plug the console cable, but only got blank screen on the terminal. So I tried to reboot the switch, but unfortunately it stuck booting. I already wait for 10 minutes and no luck. So far I tried 3 times and got the same result.

I know that it does not even reach POST check. Could it be something related to hardware? Is there anything that I can do for the switch? Thank you.

Can you force the switch into ROMMON?

have you removed this switch stack?

if not i will follow below steps :

1 Power off  the device having an issue.

2. remove from the stack

3, connect the console - go to recovery mode to get on to ROMMON

4. copy the same image to USB and boot from USB

5. if that works copy the image to flash and boot and test it.

6. all good change the switch number and priority and join the stack

Hi Balaji,

Sorry for late response. Just got the opportunity for physical access to the switch again at the office.

I tried booting from USB but the booting process stuck at the same stage as from flash. Is it a sign the switch is not recoverable?

Hello

remove the switch from stack - attach a console cable and boot the switch post the output - if any

additionally you could power up switch and press and hold in the mode button of the switch and wait for the leds to turn amber then try and see if you begin to see any output in the terminal window if you do then you should be able to reset the switch.

Hi Paul,

Sorry for late response. Just got the opportunity for physical access to the switch again at the office.

Can you elaborate more on reset the switch? I tried booting from USB but got stuck at the same point as before. I tried booting from USB and flash, then changing the power source from power supply only, power stack + PS, and power stack only.

Maybe I missed something.

What is the exact model of this switch?

Is this an "XS" model?

Hi Leo,

The switch model is WS-C3850-24XU.

Leave the switch to boot overnight:  CSCvq53573

Hi Leo,

We did leave it up at boot stuck for days, and it did not even move from where it was.

Ok, Plan B:  Power down the switch (pull the power cable), wait until the power supplies stop screaming, apply power and force the switch into ROMMON.
Load an OLDER IOS version, like 3.7.X, in Bundle Mode or Emergency-Install

See if this works.

Hi Leo,

Okay. I will have the access to the switch this Thursday. I will update the progress here.

Hi Balaji,

The boot from USB was still unsuccessful. It still stuck on the "### Launching Linux Kernel (flags = 0x5)".Temp.PNG
