Hi,
I have a new problem with Catalyst 2960S. We have four switch in a stack and now I get the message:
“%PLATFORM_RPC-3-MSG_THROTTLED: RPC Msg Dropped by throttle mechanism: type 37, class 14, max_msg 32, total throttled 73968 (hostname1-2)”

The software version is:
Cisco IOS Software, C2960S Software (C2960S-UNIVERSALK9-M), Version 12.2(55)SE, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc2)
Any ideas what it means?
Best Regards

I found some documentation on how to load the IOS via the serial port. The documentation I found said that only 9600 baud would work. (This is better than punch cards, but please tells me there is a better way to do this.)
Hey Brett,
I have a better one!
One of the reasons why I love these new models is the fact that they have USB ports. I have tried upgrading the IOS using the new Fastethernet0 port and USB port. Works like a dream.
Here's another thing: You can boot from ROMmon using USB too. Make sure you use the "usbflash0:" instead of "usbflash0" (without the colon or ":").
Thanks for the tip (+5 from me) for confirming the 12.2(55)SE1 and the failures.

You can tftp images to a 2960S switch in recovery mode using the management port.
Example :
Set laptop NIC IP to 10.10.10.5/24.
Attach network cable from management port to laptop (Might need X-over? I don't know as my LT NIC does auto-mdix)
Boot 2960S into recovery mode (press mode button during startup
Type the following:
> flash_init
> set IP_ADDR 10.10.10.10/255.255.255.0
> set DEFAULT_ROUTER 10.10.10.1
> ping 10.10.10.5
and you should get a response (BTW: ping command only works if management port is up)
At that point fire up your favorite TFTP server on your laptop (I use tftpd64).
Type the following (modify to match your own paths/files):
> copy tftp://10.10.10.5/c2960s-universalk9-mz.122-55.SE1.bin flash:/c2960s-universalk9-mz.122-55.SE1.bin
Hope this helps somebody.

We have the exact same problem on two separate 2960S stacks. Both stacks have 4 members, one is PoE and one is not. All members are running 12.2(55)SE. We'll try upgrading to SE1 but this requires a scheduled change window. Not good! Has anyone yet found somewhere where the message TYPE and CLASS codes are described?

I am gettting the same problems...

I have seen few bugs relaed to this. In most of the cases a switch replacement has been offrered. Could you please try reseating the stack cables again and reboot the switches.Check if that works out.

Has anyone tried the new IOS version 12.2(55)SE2 yet? It's made matters worst and I'm considering rolling back to 12.2(55)SE.

What problems are you seeing in SE2? I haven't tested it myself yet.

Hey Matt,
When running the 12.2(55)SE2 I noticed that the Average CPU % is hovering in the 60% mark (last 72 hours). With the 12.2(55)SE, I don't see it to be this high. Switches are in a brand new site and the only things connected into them are APs and 7900 VoIP phones.
See attachment for the result of the "sh proc cpu h".

Can you attach "show process cpu | ex 0.00"? Want to see what the offending process is. I am going to get a stack setup here in our lab also with 55SE2.

Hey Matt,
I've appended the file for multiple outputs taken from multiple switches having the same issues.
01-24-2011 02:41 PM
So it looks like it's all interrupt traffic. Are you doing any l3 routing or are these layer 2 switches?
-Matt
01-24-2011 02:56 PM
Hey Matt,
The switches are all configured for Layer 2.

I suspect that this is CSCth24278 which is not fixed until 12.2(58)SE. It's cosmetic high cpu when there's no console/vty connection. I see that it drops once you telnet/console to it to check the cpu. There's not really high CPU and there's no performance impact except for on the show proc cpu. Does it always go down when you telnet/console to it?
