Ok my company that will remain nameless :-) has bought a 3750 from a company that describe them selves as a Secondary Source Cisco supplier.
So this is brand new equipment but to my company, in essence , as I understand it, the Cisco IOS license is void.
Is this correct?
Do we need to buy new IOS licenses as we did not buy this switch directly.
And if so how much are they approx for say a 3750 switch?

Hi Michael,
Yes, you will need to purchase a new Smartnet contract for software and/or hardware if you want the ability to upgrade the IOS in the future, or if you experience a hardware failure. You'll want to contact your Cisco account team/Sales Rep for that if you have one.
Being a TAC engineer, I have absolutely no idea how much it would cost, though. :-)

Bobby

Bobby thanks for the answer, im not really concered about support or upgrades.
It's more the case of if this bit of kit is legal or not?

Oh sure, you don't need to purchase a new license to legally run what's currently loaded on the box. The only issue is that you won't be eligible for tech support, but as you mentioned, that isn't a concern.

Bobby

Bobby, thanks for that.
Would any one else like to concure with Bobby?
I always like to be super safe with this kind of stuff.
Thanks.
Mike.

I believe Bobby is incorrect. The license provided with new equipment is to the original purchaser only.
You can, however, purchase just a single license without a SmartNet contract.
Any Cisco reseller should be able to provide it, I usually go through cdw (www.cdw.com).
If you call them, they may discount some to win your future business.
Good Luck
