Cisco Switch models that support dynamic routing with vPC

Hi,

Currently we have several switches in a DC and we want to apply a redesign to our topology. Some of these switches are Nexus 5000 series, Catalyst 4500-X and Catalyst 3850, and I'd like to know if these models, and which ones, support dynamic routing like BGP and OSPF through virtual Port-Channel (vPC) links, or if we have to use dedicated L2 links so that we can transport VLANs to be used in dynamic routing.

Thanks.

Hi,

Currently these are our models and associated licenses:

  • WS-C4500X-32SFP+ with Enterprise Services license.
  • N5K-C5672UP with Cisco Ent MGMT license.
  • WS-C3850-24S-S, 24T-E, 48P-S. The 24T-E version has a IP Services license, the other ones have IP Base.

Images are as follows:

  • Universal k9 3.7E for Catalyst 3850
  • Universal Image 3.7E for Catalyst 4500-X

The design depends on how your current topology is built up and how you are planning to place these devices i.e the Nexus in cores, 4500X in distribution, etc

From the information you have provided :
Nexus 5k supports dynamic routing with vPC from release 7.3(0)N1(1) (LAN enterprise license)
https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/switches/datacenter/nexus5500/sw/release/notes/7x/Nexus5500_Release_Notes_7x.html#pgfId-622079

WS-C4500X-32SFP+ with Enterprise Services license. : Supports routing and VSS
WS-C3850-24S-S supports routing with IP services with IP Base you can only have devices configured in routed access mode (i.e Stub device)

Thanks.

So dynamic routing by using virtual Port Channel is only supported in Nexus 5K?

virtual Port Channel (vPC) is only supported on Nexus platforms

Ok, got it.

Thank you very much, @Deepak Kumar @nazimkha.
