i was wondering how to copy a cisco ios image from a 3750 to my pc so that i can use it to upgrade a switch on my desk.

Download a free TFTP server application and load it on your PC. Put your PC in the same IP subnet as the switch.
Make sure you can ping from the switch to your PC and from PC to switch
lunch the TFTP server
login to the switch
copy flash: tftp:
and follow prompt

i figured i needed a TFTFP server. im haveing an issue now where when i try to overwrit the current version it says the file i hace is not valid.
im going from 12.2(55)se4 down to 12.2(53)se2

You're going from one bad IOS to another bad IOS.
If you want a stable IOS version, try 12.2(55)SE7.
I simply do NOT understand the need to "backup" the IOS of your switch. I'd recommend you go to the Cisco website and download the IOS from there.
