I need to remove the secondary Supervisor to another core switch which is the same model, in order for the two Cores to have the same Supervisor and  configure VSS since now the customer has SPOF with his core switch.

The Core Switch OS is below:

I knew that VSS isn't supported by the recent versions of OS and Rommon based on the below:

Virtual switching system (VSS) can enable on Catalyst 4500/4500X series switch (Supervisor Engine 7-E, Supervisor Engine 7L-E, and Catalyst 4500-X). Cisco IOS XE 3.4.0SG and ROMMON IOS Version 15.0(1r) SG7 later released support VSS. This document discuss about Cisco 4500 SUP7-E ROMMON upgrade.

My questions that I need help with are the following:

1- What is the recommended way to remove the secondary supervisor and plug it into the other core switch. Shall i turn off the power of the core and then remove it and plug it to the other one. Or i can remove while the core is powered on and avoid downtime, is this possible without the secondary supervisor crashing.

2- The minimum for OS and Rommon to support VSS is Cisco IOS XE 3.4.0SG and ROMMON IOS Version 15.0(1r) SG7. However, the recommended OS for the supervisor on Cisco website is Release 3.6.7E MD.

Shall I upgrade to 3.4.0 and 15.0(1r)SG7 or go with the recommended 3.6.7E, If I do it, can I directly jump from ROM: 15.0(1r)SG2 to 15.0(1r)SG7  and from 3.2.0SG to 3.6.7E or there is middle steps. Is there any good posts to show how to do the upgrades

I really appreciate any helpful feedbacks or advice from your experiences.

Hello!

I thing 4500 switches support are hot swappble, so you can add or remove cards to switch while it is running.

"The redundancy scheme using the Supervisor Engine V is similar to that for the Supervisor Engine IV. Alerts are generated to the network monitoring software if either supervisor fails, and hot swapping of supervisors is supported without disrupting system operation. Switchover of supervisors can be forced by software, or by the user via Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP). The resiliency features of the Cisco Catalyst 4500 Series prevent network outages that could result in lost business and revenue."

And I thing you can upgrade to 3.6.7, but firts you have to upgrade the rommon image form the suppervisor

"For IOS XE Release 3.6.0E, the ROMMON image must be upgraded to use the 3.6.0XE image (15.1(1r)SG4). The IOS XE Bundle format for Supervisor Engine 8-E has changed, necessitating a new ROMMON image." Read all the related notes firts and after you can do the upgrade.
