I have a cisco 3845 router and would like to add a switch card in order to configure SVI interface as the design requires to have redundancy to from the router to two core switches but using only one IP address for the 3845. Is there any particular IOS image required to create SVI or is it just the cpu on the switch card that makes the router possible to configure SVI ?

As long as the IOS version supports the card you can configure it .

Depends on your card and the IOS version (IP Base feature set should work).

You need an EtherSwitch

Table 7 on the IOS requirement.
