Difference between switches....

Hi all,

I'm trying to determine the difference between two switch models and I'm failing to see the difference

2960s-48fps-l and 2960s-48lps-l

I've done product compares and I don't see a difference between these two, except that one appears to be $500 more than the other.  Can someone provide some insight on the difference between these two?

Thanks

Jason

Hi

The differnece is available POE power.

Cisco Catalyst 2960S-48FPS-L =740 W

Cisco Catalyst 2960S-48LPS-L =370 W

Thanks

LPS means it will support 48 ports PoE (15.4w) on a first-come-first-serve basis until full.

FPS means FULL PoE power (15.4w) to all 48-ports.

We recently installed the 2960S-48LPS-L (370W) and after connected only (25) 5 watt devices the system will not power the 26th device. How is that possible when we are only using 150 watts so far?

That would seem like the switch is "setting aside" (or reserving) full PoE power for each PoE active port, although the ports are not drawing full power.

Can I disable the unused ports to get power to only the ports we need?

Might be worth trying, along with, if supported, disabling PoE on a port not needing it, although otherwise active.

There also might be (?) a command to change PoE wattage allocation from max per port to what's used (or even a fixed allocation less the 15W, if you know that port's device need less).

I'm not familiar with your device.  Likely worthwhile reviewing PoE usage documentation for your device.
