Hope you are doing, in config mode right ?

snmp-server user name [auth {md5 | sha} passphrase [auto] [priv [aes-128] passphrase] [engineID id]

Example:

switch(config)# snmp-server user NMS auth sha abcd1234 priv abcdefgh engineID 00:00:00:63:00:01:00:10:20:15:10:03

How to Ask The Cisco Community for Help

Hello!

Can you share what NX-OS software release this Nexus 7000 switch is running?

The syntax of the command you shared appears to be fine. Support for SNMPv3 was added in NX-OS software release 6.2(2), so you need to be running that version or higher in order to configure an SNMPv3 user.

Thank you!
