I inherited a flat network. All switches have default configs and are pretty much used like hubs. No ip's assigned, trunks or anything. Trying to figure out the best way to get some management on these switches so I can find out which switch is connected to what. I plan on doing some trunking and vlaning in the near future. Would assigning ip's and turning on cdp be a good start to this project. I have approximately 15 switches. Their are currently no internal routers in play. Just a couple of firewalls used as gateways.

Without making a lot of changes, you can configure interface Vlan 1 with an IP address.
That should get your management going.

Thanks Edison. I have approximately 15 switches. No physical lable to see which switches are connected up.
