How to delete vlan.dat on 4500x pair in a VSS ?

I'm trying to delete vtp domain from a pair or 4500x running VSS . I tried erasing the VLAN.dat file , but after the switches reload the VLAN configs are still not erased including VTP domain. Anyone has any idea how to erase the vlan configs ?

Hi,

is this VSS stand-alone or is it connected to other switches which could populate the VLAN database?

How did you reload the box? Did you use the 'redundancy reload shelf' command to reset both the active and standby switch?

HI Rolf,

The switch system  is not connected to any other switch at this time and running in VTP transparent mode. I used the " reload " command to reload the VSS.

The reload command performs a reload only on the switch where reload is issued.

Could you try redundancy reload shelf instead and see if that works?

If you are using VTP transparent mode then the vlan information is also stored in the running config as well.

So you need to remove them, do a "copy run start" command, delete the vlan.dat and reload.

Hi Guys,

I tried deleting the vlans manually and erased the vlan.dat file and then performed the " redundancy reload shelf"  . The VLANs are gone but the vtp domain still exists. " no vtp domain " command doesn't works.

Any suggestions.

Did you check your configuration for the VTP domain name as well ?

I'm trying to remove the VTP domain . I configured it for testing but since I'm adding these switches to production I don't need this setting.

If you are deleting the vlan.dat then it can't be getting it from there.

If it is in the running config you need to do the same procedure as before ie. remove it, copy run start and delete vlan.dat.

It is in the running config but i cant seem to remove it from there . As i mentioned earlier the " no vtp domain" commands doesn't works.

Try it from just enable mode.

I think the issue is once you have created it it has to be something unless you are prepared to erase the entire configuration, delete the vlan.dat and reload your switch in which case it will be removed.

With VTP transparent it shouldn't really matter to be honest so you could just set it to anything you like assuming all your other switches are VTP transparent as well.
