IE 2000 MAC ID reporting wrong using CLI

I have an oddity where the reported MAC ID of switches using CLI is not correct at last pair of digits. This anomaly is consistent across all 4 2000s that I have. 3 of my switches have MACs that end in .00. But when I look at the MAC ID  using CLI, they consistently show that these switch's MACs end in .40, .40, and .09? My 4th switch has a MAC ending in .80, but reading it with CLI, it reports .c0 instead.   If I look at these switch's web pages, the MAC ID is correct (matches the label) there. If I look at device MACs that are connected to switch ports, their MACs are accurate and correct.   Anyone have any thoughts on this?     THANKS!

Replying to self as correction: 3rd switch whose MAC ID ends in .00 also reads back .40. So the consistency here is that CLI MAC ID read always adds :40 to the last 2 digits of the REAL switch MAD ID. Now the question is..... WHY?
