Intermittent Management but stable end point connection (SAME VLAN)

Hi,

I would like to address this, if find it very weird.

Set up:

Management -  VLAN1

User - VLAN 1

So the thing is if your management is intermittent and if its the same vlan with your users, it will also be intermittent right? Since you are in the same vlan?

But opposite thing happens, My management is intermittent but my users connected to the switch is not intermittent (did you get that?) they belong to the same VLAN which is vlan1. I find it weird because your user should also be intermittent.

I did check the logs but none of them was suspicious.

Thank you so much.

Hi,

What are you using to test connectivity? Are you using ping to the management address and to a user?

Have you checked the process on the switch? Could be something loading the switch.

Thanks

Hi John,

I already checked my cpu process and it's low.

Test Plan:

1. Ping the management IP from core to the concerned switch (vice versa) - intermittent

2. Tried to patch my PC to the switch that is intermittent (expected result since in the same vlan connection would also be intermittent) - able to obtain IP address and can ping the gateway stable

3. Tried to replace the Management IP other vlan - ping is still intermittent

Management is intermittent to ping but when you are connected to the switch that is intermittent your connection is stable. Management and user are both in the same VLAN.

Hello,

So when you say management IP, are you referring to a separate management workstation? Or is this an interface on the switch such as a loopback ip or interface vlan? Also, when you say intermittent, are you referring to packet loss via the ping command?

You also mention "able to obtain IP address", are you using DCHP? If so, there might be a possibility that duplicate IPs may be taking place if you haven't excluded the IPs you set for the management IPs.
