Thanks to all, just wanted to know the benefits or real advantages of pushing layer 3 to the access layer (closet switches, this is routing from the closet to the core over the common layer 2 trunks to a core design? I appreciate any input.

Hi
If u r using layer 3 links between u r switches then u need not define them as layer 2 trunks.Using layer 3 u can get fast convergence than using layer 2 trunk links as stp will take longer time to converge.
Thanks

One of the main advantages is the elimination of spanning tree between your access and distribution/core switches. This eliminates any ports that would be blocking and allows more efficient use of all network links to each access switch. Also don't have to worry about spanning tree convergence or layer 2 loops.
