Hi,
we have a core switch with all vlans
172.22.1.1 vlan 1
172.22.2.1 vlan 2
172.22.3.1 vlan 3
172.22.4.1 vlan 4
vtp is enabled and all switches have same vlans and correspoind default gateway set
2960(172.22.3.2) <--------------------Core Switch --------> 2960 (172.22.2.2)
| 172.22.1.1
| 172.22.2.1
PC 172.22.3.1
172.22.4.3 172.22.4.1
I can get to 172.22.4.3 from 172.22.3.2.
THe problem i have having is, i cant seem to ping 172.22.4.3 from 172.22.2.2 although i can reach core switch 172.22.4.1. but when i create an SVI on 172.22.2.2 with an ip address of
int vl 4
ip add 172.22.4.44 255.255.255.0
then i can get to 172.22.4.3. not sure why ?
ip routing is enabled on the core switch
can anyone explain why please?
Thanks

the reason why svi on the right 2960 (4.44) can get to 4.3 is becouse they are in the same subnet so there is no routing, so it looks like a routing issue. one thing i do recomended is having all your svis on the same vlan for ease of managment.
as for your issue what routing are you using? how is your stp looking?
sorry not to helpful but this one has got me confused as well would love to see what hte issue it.

we are just using the layer 3 switch for intervlan routing..all ports are trunk..stp is fine...forwarding mode
i just dont know why i cant to from the access switch ?
any mor thoughts?
thanks

even if i do an extended ping from the core switch with another svi (say vla2 ) does not work
core switch
ping 172.22.4.3 source 172.22.2.1 - no reply
looks like core switch is not doing the routing
enabled ip routing as well

I would say your trunking is not setup correctly. You would have to post configs for all 3 switches in order to take a look . If you force on your trunks (switchport mode trunk) , it will show as trunking as long as you have a L1 connection even if the config is wrong so I would check the trunking and vlan setups on the end 2960's and core switch. Each endpoint should be configured exactly the same , byt that I mean the 2960 link to the core link should be exactly the same on both sides as far trunking and vlan setups and what is allowed across the trunks. Check that the native vlans match on all links .
