Ports on 6509

Hi

I would like to know how the ports on a cisco 6509 MSFC work. Basically there are 2 physical blades. The A blade has 12 ports and the B blade has 48 ports. When I log onto the switch and I do a sh port I get 1/2, 1/3 all the way up to 6/16. Yet on the 6509 they are physically labeled 1 to 48. I am certain that I am not on the wrong 6509 as there is only 1 6509. When I session to the router it is configured with 4 Vlans only.

What am I missing? When the person at the 6509 is saying "I am plugging a cable into port 24" which one of the ports on the 6509 can I check to see that the notconnect state has changed to connect?

Thanks

wvw

The sup card installed is MSFC2 if that answers your question?

Thanks

Hi,Your switch contains 3 modules with 16 ports each and 1 module with 48 ports. If somebody tells you "port no 24" it is very hard to judge because this is not the way to identify any port. You need to ask your counterpart to provide the port number details in / format and this will resolve your confusion.

Hi, if you pull a linecard out when the system is up/operational, the running config continues to have the configurations of that module ports.config will be removed only after the reload.the reason for this behaviour is with the assumption that the card will be inserted again.to view the physical presence of the card you need to use "show module" and you can configure the ports appropriately.doing config for the non existent module will have no effect as long as card is not inserted back.
